This was AMAZING to watch!! Congrats on 2nd place woman on Day 1!! This video encapsulates why you're one of my all time favorite channels... epic adventures in incredible locations with positive vibes and an eye toward sustainability. I can't wait to see the rest, and hear after about any recommendations on dealing with the constant wet, etc. Love what you said about "everything hurts, but nothing specific". That is when you know an ultra is going well. 😆 And as far as being poorly prepared, I've come to the realization that most of the very best parts of my life would never have happened if I'd waited until I was "ready".

Great video Flora. I know the area well - Inverie to Kinloch Hourn. I've done the Munros in that area, two from the Barrisdale side and one from Inverie when we camped at the site you used. BTW it was the bealach Mam Barrisdale that you slogged over. Cant wait to see the rest of your trip. I travel at a more sedate pace - trail running is for you younger guys! I used to live outside Bristol (Wells) but moved to the Highlands 5 years ago.😀

A trick I learned from a climbing/camping trip last weekend is to fill a spare nalgene bottle with hot (not boiling) water and put in insulated sleeping bag with you on cold nights. Might not be so helpful for those packing light but it made all the difference in sleeping warmly during winter camping!

I had a very similar day recently at the end of the 50km day 2 of the Cape Wrath Ultra, so I literally ran the same last 10km as you 2 months ago at the end of a long day. It was hot and sunny for us though! Even so that last 10km along the loch is an absolute killer!
Kudos to you Flora. I love running but detest camping, scarred as a kid by camping trips, so would not do this. Scenery looks stunning takes me back to last weekend where I ran beachy head marathon.

Great video. On getting lost, are runners required to have navigation skills, map & compass? I'd like to do a single day event like this but can't navigate. Just bought 2 books to try and learn and am practicing on routes I know.
@FloraBeverley3 жыл бұрын
You don't need to be able to navigate - we don't know the route so map and compass would be useless in this specific route. We just followed red flags and verbal instructions at aid stations!

Great video, thank you Flora! I'm curious - how do strangers react when you ask them to film you? (I assume that's what you do for the shots of you running where you're not holding the camera) I'd feel too awkward to do that! Also - did you have to carry all of your food or was that part of what you left at camp?
@FloraBeverley3 жыл бұрын
Haha well after several hours of running with them they're rarely strangers anymore - it's one thing I love about these things! And people tend to be happy to help :) and we had to carry ALL the food we had while out there. Was heavy!

Well done, and a very respectable time. Curiously how much walking on the video yet you weren’t slow. Looks like you had plenty of ‘Scottish sunshine’! Think you should have had waterproof socks, not perfect but your feet stay a lot warmer. Also twice as much food, and a winter sleeping bag. Oh and forget the water bladder, no shortage of fresh supplies
@FloraBeverley3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! Yes I could mostly only film when I was walking so it looks like i walked the whole thing 😂 Tempted to try waterproof socks but nothing is waterproof when you're wading thoguh rivers. I defo had enough food (don't want to run with any more weight than I had) but yes awesome about the rivers! Some areas had cattle so not suitable for drinking (I saw a dead sheep in one river) but most were clean and I did refill from them :)
@markthomasson50773 жыл бұрын
I run in the Mamores, love my waterproof socks, especially at this time of year. But, yes if the water is over the top, you have a problem. The longer ones better, and I think there is one that seals at the top, perhaps no good for running. I am normally high up, so no worries about clean water. Didn’t realise you had to carry all your food, (just don’t get tempted by the dead sheep) was that for all the days / camp food. If you are liking Scotland, how about the Skyline Scotland series next year, I have done the Vertical K, the Ring of Steall, and this year attempted the Ben Nevis Ultra…it’s hard.

This is really not meant to be offensive, but I always thought you're meant to run marathons. But I see most of the guys participating in this run, walking quite a bit of it. When I did my first half marathon last year, I was surprised because I had trained to be able to run the entire distance, but I saw SO many people walk constantly. Is it me that is just having too high expectations? Or being super unrealistic?
@FloraBeverley2 жыл бұрын
Road marathons and ultramarathons are very different beasts. It's generally recommended to walk plenty in hilly ultras to keep HR low, otherwise hills cause HR spikes which means you're less likely to be able to finish. Tough terrain just adds to the issues, and walking is often faster as well as more efficient! FWIW everyone in this race walked sections, and some of the runners are elite/semi-elite, so they know how it's done! I came in the top 10 each day and walked loads as you can see :) Hope that helps!

A radio 4 programme I listened to about all this dismayed me. "Ultra" marathon 4 days, entrance fee £9000, six month training course £6000. I reckon these folk should be monitored and secure them as insane. Why should a helicopter rescue prats like this.
@FloraBeverley Жыл бұрын
Which ultramarathon were they talking about?? There are some insanely expensive ones and some slightly more reasonable ones (though they're rarely cheap). This one is £700, not £9000 😅
@eng9040 Жыл бұрын
@Flora Beverley It was a west Highland one, was on radio 4 programme Easter Monday. I thought it was an April fools thing, but apparently you get luxury accommodation and Mitchelen star meals, over a four day event. Mind boggles.
@FloraBeverley Жыл бұрын
@ENG oh yeah, that one is a bit of a joke in the industry. It's for people who want to do something epic and have all the money in the world. It's not this one!! Most ultras are expensive, but nothing like that.
