Lancer, Series 1, Episode 1 (NB: This first episode was an edited version of the pilot movie, The Homecoming. Although nice to see it in color, the black and white pilot is better.)

I was only 8 when Lancer was on TV and with two older brothers I watched whatever they decided to watch. After doing some research, turns out I remember watching Mod Squad which aired same time/same night as Lancer. That's one reason the show was cancelled. I think another reason for low ratings/viewers is how each episode featured prominently just one of the main characters. The best episodes feature all 3, or at least Scott and Johnny equally.
@margaretp14653 жыл бұрын
In NZ Lancer and Mod Squad didn't clash so I watched and enjoyed both. Many years later though Lancer stands the test of time. The acting and moralizing in Mod Squad now seems cringe-worthy. I agree the second series of Lancer in particular suffered from a lack of the brothers together and even on their own. I don't know what the producers were thinking to make the focus of an episode Murdoch, Teresa or Jelly, though there are some excellent cameos in those episodes from Johnny or Scott.
@sharonkrikorian56093 жыл бұрын
@@margaretp1465 yep, NBC really mishandled this series in so many ways. The exterior scenes were far more realistic than Bonanza, for one example. There was so much potential for Lancer to be a long running hit. Two seasons leaves me wanting and wishing for more, especially since Johnny is featured in only a few. Good to hear, Veronica. Such a shame they cut some important parts from this version.
@scvandy31294 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind some of the cuts were due to the anti-TV violence movement that occurred after the King and Kennedy assassinations in April and June, respectively -- months after the pilot filmed and was edited for 1) consideration by CBS for its fall schedule, and 2) to air as the premiere in Sept. 1968. Like the arrival at the massacre site, the hanging man; that turned into a manufactured, sloppy, quick zoom. Additionally the sight of the murdered spouse 'Maria' didn't even make it into the full pilot. TV GUIDE reported at the time viewers would just have to accept the despicable act's bloody outcome from Murdoch's exclamation "oh my God" when standing at the doorway. All those 'bad men' that deserved to be shot -- by Johnny or any of the Lancers or hands -- were just too much for the skittish network censors, who basically rolled over and played dead letting Washington, D.C. blame all of society's ills on TV and movie violence (i.e., not: politics, poverty, guns, racism). Pity the stuntmen who Johnny "killed" that invited family and friends and neighbors over that Tue. evening in September to watch them "take the fall, take the horse fall" only to see filmed evidence of their dangerous work had hit the proverbial "cutting room floor".
@sharonpolikoff7282 Жыл бұрын
The attempt to tone down TV violence in those years led to some criticism of Mod Squad and High Chaparral, but those shows managed to hold on for five seasons. And of course Bonanza and Gunsmoke were strong right into the 70s, even with the loss of important characters and other cast changes. I think that Wayne Maunder wanting to leave may have been the main reason for the show ending after two seasons. With the wonderful chemistry between WM and JS, it would have been disastrous to recast the role of Scott.

Actually, Tarantino introduced these fast zooms in Kill Bill first, which wasn't a neo-Western like Django Unchained or The Hateful Eight. If you remember the old school Chinese Kung Fu movies then you'd recall how the fast zoom shots were used in them, such as Jackie Chan's "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" or Bruce Lee's "Big Boss".

FYI, Two years prior I was at L.A.'s New Beverly Cinema, owned and operated by Quentin Tarantino, shortly after James Stacy's death where Quentin had the management screen his 16 mm print of the pilot, plus Kirk Douglas's "Posse" and the Oct. 30, 1973 "ABC Movie of the Week" 'Ordeal' (with Diana Muldaur and Arthur Hill), the last Stacy film role before his tragic motorcycle accident. Those in attendance, including Stacy's lady Antigoni and her supportive posse plus "Lancer" pilot writer Samuel A. Peeples' grandson, are FOREVER indebted to Quentin for arranging the near, all night, film program honoring the memory of James Stacy.
@margaretp14654 жыл бұрын
@@scvandy3129 I believe Antigoni and the Lancer fans lucky enough to attend that showing of the pilot etc were very appreciative of QT's tribute to James Stacy. The 50th Anniversary celebrations was in June, 2018, organised by members of the various Lancer/James Stacy/Wayne Maunder Facebook sites. See facebook.com/groups/lanceranniversary2018/ . The two main FB sites are facebook.com/groups/LancerTheBestWestern/ and facebook.com/groups/LancerFanFiction/ but there are several. The UK fans are having their annual get together late September if you're in that part of the world: facebook.com/groups/teamstacyuk/ They're all closed sites so I'm not sure what you'll see unless you join.

What's up with the little girl in OUATIH not in this episode? Every, what's real, what's not, I've read about OUATIH says the little girl in the Lancer episode was a real actress (1968) & the name on the back of her chair (Trudi ?) is her real name. Also, said her character's name in the Lancer episode was the same name she had in QT's movie. I've read there were 2 pilot episodes shot. One in black & white & 1 in color. Supposedly, the b&w one was much longer & had more scenes in it than this color one. Perhaps she was in the b&w episode, but, was cut from the scaled down color version? 3 different real, or, not real, articles I read all said the little girl was a real actress in the Lancer episode, her real name was Trudi(?) & her character's name in OUATIH was the same name she had in the Lancer episode. I'm confused!!
@margaretp14654 жыл бұрын
Someone suggested in a comment against 'Little Darling of the Sierras' that Trudi was supposed to replicate Penny Rose in some way. I don't know if it is true or not, but fortunately Trudi was much more appealing than Penny Rose. In some respects Trudi could be seen as a younger version of Teresa who does appear in in 'The Highriders'. Teresa doesn't really show much gumption in this episode, but she does in one or two others. To my knowledge there was never a 'Trudi' or a 'Julia' in Lancer, neither character nor actress. There were a couple of Julies. 'The Highriders' is a cut down version of the black and white pilot movie. It was reduced in length to fit with commercial breaks and arguably to satisfy those who wanted less gun play. This was the era where cop shows and SciFi took over from Westerns, and wounding and stunning was more pc than killing. The scene near the end, for example, where Johnny is shot off his horse and Scott runs out to rescue him is spoiled in my view by poor editing. After Johnny fell he came to and shot several bandits before Scott reached him. Much more believable than the gunfighter lying on the ground helpless and barely shooting anyone during the main action. LancerFan uploaded the pilot; it's called 'The Homecoming'. I only uploaded the episodes she couldn't.

Tarantino simply twisted real history slightly with his movie. It's meant as a homage and to simply be "vaguely familiar".

Regarding 'Marabella', the character played by 'Trudi Fisher' in the OUATIH movie: there is an extra (deleted?) scene on the OUATIH DVD that explains who she is. This scene re-creates the scene where Teresa meets Scott and Johnny arriving on the stagecoach. The script is pretty faithful to the original (much more so than the movie is to Johnny's Day Pardee showdown and bar conversation), but it does make it clear that this 8-year-old Marabella is replacing Teresa's character. She meets the boys at the stagecoach depot, has all of Teresa's lines, including explaining that they're brothers, and at one point, she embraces Scott (Luke Perry) and calls him 'brother' herself. I had also wondered why Tarantino would replace Teresa with an 8-year-old, if he's such a huge Lancer fan. It's a little surprising. Lancer fans really should seek this scene out. Luke Perry really shines as Scott here; it's perhaps his best scene in the entire movie. At one point, just after getting out of the stagecoach, he takes a brush out of his pocket and brushes off his suit (it's quite apparent he keeps the brush there solely for that purpose). It's a hilarious move! Especially to us Lancer fans who know that Johnny had fallen on Scott in the stagecoach earlier; it's as if he's brushing Johnny's dirt off of his clothes. 😁 By this one single action, IMHO, Perry/Tarantino manage to establish Scott as a 'dandy' perhaps better than the original series ever did. It's really a shame this scene was cut from the movie, but it was probably deemed unnecessary since it didn't include either Rick Dalton, Cliff Booth, or Sharon Tate; it was really only of major interest to Lancer fans. I think including it would have helped make more sense out of the family relationships to those who weren't already familiar with Lancer.

Great tv western series, and apparently there is a conspiracy to squash it. All of the episode's were on You Tube in decent quality, then got yanked. A few were reposted, for the time being. Disney owns the original film, and won't release it on DVD. You would think that they would at least allow people to watch it, if they won't release it?

@@revomarty1614 Hopefully by now you've watched the entire pilot -- like a lot of other newcomers to "Lancer" thanks to "OUATIH". To answer: Johnny Madrid, a gun hawk who works both sides of the border, is James Stacy's character's name. Here in central California he's informed / reminded he is the the son of his birth father Murdoch Lancer, biggest land owner in the region, played by Andrew Duggan. And Johnny has a half brother, Scott (Wayne Maunder), Boston-raised and a higher social class than that achieved by Johnny. With the family and money connection Johnny Madrid surrenders his name and, in the tag, announces to all he's now Johnny Lancer. In subsequent episodes, there are occasions where it suits Johnny's purpose to revert to the name Johnny Madrid, a man with a reputation with a gun, and not part of the Lancer empire.
