@PyramidHead316 Жыл бұрын
There is actually a comic book prequel to this film called "The Hills Have Eyes: The Beginning", which I highly recommend. It's definitely worth your time. So, the guy at the beginning in the gas station was actually an old ally of the community, before the government screwed them out of their land and turned them into mutants. If I remember right, he had a relationship with the matriarch who would give birth to the mutant leader. He tried his best to help them out, but after things went to shit, I think he felt he had to keep giving them people as payment. That's why he's apologizing just before he commits suicide - he felt he failed all of them, and knows what a monster he's become. As to what happens to Doug and the kids, you find that out in the comic book - I will say it's not a completely unhappy ending, despite that stinger in the film. The comic book is actually a pretty in-depth tragedy; it's not just blood and gore. Although there is one hell of a battle between the government troops and the mutants. It's available for free online. Fun fact: the images shown in the intro are actual mutations of children in real life from Agent Orange, which the government used in Vietnam. That's what chemical warfare does, folks. I like this movie, but it's not an easy watch, and I don't watch it often. It's greatly disturbing, which is what I feel a horror movie is supposed to be, and I think it feels more like Wes' complete vision of what he originally wanted to do, just enhanced with Alexandre Aja's input. One thing I think was sacrificed was the family dynamic between the mutants. With them being an actual community here and not just one single family, you'd think the ties would run deeper, but the film doesn't dwell on it. Jupiter is a shell of himself, and I prefer the version in the original. Hades, who is the actual patriarch of the mutant community, gets even worse treatment in the sequel. Other than that, I think it's a perfect example of how to do a remake of a classic movie while honoring the original, and not stomping all over its memory. You guys should check out "The Blob" (1988) one time, if you want to see another example of how to vastly improve on the source material, when doing a remake. As for the sequels...the original sequel is considered one of the worst horror movies ever made. But it has a dog flashback from Beast! 😂 The remake sequel is worth watching only if you want to see the gore and the brutal kills. If you thought Jupiter got no characterization here, or Mars or Pluto, Hades is even worse - he's a pure paper thin one-dimensional villain. Like I said, you have to read the comic book if you want any info on his backstory and the community of mutants. Ironic, since in the comic he gets a full character arc that is excellently realized and paints him as very sympathetic. Honestly, they would have been better off just waiting a bit and filming the comic book as is - it would have made a much better sequel/prequel.

Its a good remake, with things i like more, others i like less, comparing with the original. Normally im not a gorish person, but here, the gore wasnt the star, instead had enough to add something to the story. The gore give a more brutal asthetic, considering the movie is just brutal. I like the fact, the remake gives this tension that anyone could die. No one is safe. Despite following the original plot very close, yet it have its own identity that anything can happen! I just wished, the mutant family wasnt show too much... specially because around this time, mutant cannibals were a thing in horror movies. Since we saw so many elements about the mutant family, that was in the genre mutant cannibal horror movies, that become just common. Anyway, this is just another example, that a remake can be well done!
@PyramidHead316 Жыл бұрын
I think for me, it's almost the reverse: they didn't show enough of the mutant family. In the original, they were a close family, with Ruby being the outcast. In the prequel comic, you find out this is an entire community, and they were pretty close knit. So you'd think they'd have a lot more characterization for the mutants here. But no; Papa Jupiter barely speaks, and isn't really a factor outside of one or two scenes, and you don't really get a sense of the other mutants watching each other's backs, like in the original. I think it's one of the very few instances of them sacrificing something good about the original for the gore. They feel more like the last remaining shreds of the town, rather than an actual functioning family. If it weren't for that, it would be a perfect example of how to remake a horror movie, for me. It's still pretty good, though. 🙂
