The Hip-Hop Museum: Rocky Bucano

@thhmuseum is located in the borough where Hip Hop started on 8/11/73, in The Bronx. The current and future 52,000-square-foot locations across the street can be found at 610 Exterior Street, Bronx, NY 10451. The founder and president of the Museum is @rockybucano. He is a Bronx native and an early pioneer of Hip Hop history and culture. Rocky, “as a teenage DJ in the early 70s,” was present in the 1973 Disco scene, spinning the disco albums that gave early Hip Hop MCs the “get down” instrumentals they used to create the genre we know today. Before running the UHHM, Rocky wore many different hats in the music industry. One of those hats was a producer as the co-founder of Strong City Records in 1986 with @originaldjjazzyja .

The current location officially opened in December 2019, across from Mill Pond Park. The first rapper to be signed by a major record label, Curtis Blow, was the first chairman of the project. Rocky has partnered with artists like @llcoolj @remyma , @fatjoe , @mrchuckd @flavorflavofficial , @therealdjericb @therealdougefresh , and @kidfromkidnplay to ensure that the Museum tells the entire story of Hip Hop. @orrdesigns , the creator of the first Hip Hop comic, is a part of the UHHM staff…

On 8/11/23, Hip-Hop artists and culturalists gathered for the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. The museum organized a free concert in Mill Pond Park. Fifty years ago, two 18-year-old kids ran a back-to-school party in the 1520 Sedgwick Avenue apartments recreation room. The DJ was Kingston, Jamaica-born @dj_koolherc; it was his sister’s party. Rocky told me, “The one thing that people should know about Hip-Hop is that it is a youth culture, started by youth. It continues to be supported by youth in each era of Hip-Hop.
