‘Cancel culture’ isn’t new. Well, not entirely.
There’s no denying that the advent of smartphones and Twitter has played a huge part in online outrage. It’s also true that internet mobs behave differently from their off-world counterparts. But for the most part, ex-communicating people for violating social norms is part of human nature. The inevitability means it will be with us forever.
There is good news though. Cancel culture has happened so many times before that there are plenty of world examples to help you escape its clutches, and plenty of lessons to help understand how this hive-mind works. However, be warned. Just like evolutionary biology, cancel culture adapts. New words are coined, old arguments are given a makeover and sooner or later a new target is chosen. So, heed these lessons from humanity’s past if you don’t want to become a persona non grata. Unless you’re ready to become a martyr of course!
It’s time to learn how history works as we present ‘A Historical Guide to Surviving Cancel Culture’.

Cancel culture can go too far where people jump onto something they care deeply about without taking a second to get the context. But at the same time, I've seen far too many god awful human beings do or say objectively terrible things then wail cancel culture like its some magical social shield to any legitimate criticism.

Cancel culture just because it does not have a disparate impact on someone who's rich like Dave Chappell does not mean it is not a problem, Cancel culture is a threat to civil liberties like freedom of speech, freedom of association, and others. If don't care about a rich guy like Dave Chappell, so be it, but think about how it impacts a POOR MAN who is subjected to it who does NOT have the financial power to shield himself from it!

As for America (the "new"world), the pilgrims (and their likes elsewhere) and the "Non pilgrims" (and their likes elsewhere) tried to cancel each other in England and in the rest of Europe. Then, the pilgrims (and their likes) took their brand of cancelations to the "new" world.

one of the biggest instances of cancel culture not mentioned was what happened to Dixie Chicks. During a concert in London they said they were ashamed to be from Texas because of Bush and were against the invasion of Iraq. They received thousands of death threats, Lipton cancelled their promotional contracts, sales of their albums dropped.

Political correctness exists in every time and every culture. The only thing that changes is what is considered unacceptable. For example it may today be considered unacceptable to say bad things about homosexuals or Jews or Africans or any other group but go back a few decades and saying good things about these same groups could get you in trouble. Some people praise Russia because you can say bad things about homosexuality there but it’s not like they have more free speech. Try saying anything positive about homosexuality in Russia and you are likely to go to prison rather than just being banned from social media. I’m glad this video talk about this because it’s nothing new. And yes the claiming the youth has no morals is as old as time. Every single generation thinks the one that comes after is worse. I remember hearing about a Roman emperor talking about how the youth had no morals and don’t stay married and just care about themselves and their pleasures and it would be the downfall of civilisation that men and women don’t stay together in marriage. You hear the exact same thing from some people today. Two millennia later nothing has changed.

I disagree with the point about Justine Sacco...it wasn't the calendar, it was the occupation. It would be perfectly fine for a Trevor Noah or John Oliver show or Even to a lesser extent. Bill Maher. The context in that case would be clear that it is a show that is comedy which exaggerates terrible things about the world to humorous effect as satire. A person whose job is public relations executive doesn't have the same contextual benefit.

All i know is that cancel culture is bad for both spectrums. This is a beast that once unleashed will not be subdued. Today libreals are enjoying it tomorrow conservatives will. Its a cycle, one's on top then the other but the concept of cancellation by a group towards an individual with whom they have diametrically opposite point views is very unfortunate sadly!

Conservatives just like to cancel wee-little things like Jewish people, LGBT people, immigrants, etc. It's central to their doctrine. Cancel culture is intrinsic to being a reactionary. Also, liberal is not left, but non-extreme right wing. The distortion is part of ensnaring your mind to get you thinking in a false dichotomy. It creates the mental bias that if you're not one, you must be the other.

Using AIDS as a setup for a punchline, even South Park rarely goes there. It would still be out of place on late night left wing political comedy shows today, and with good reason, even if the message was actually about white privilege rather than taking a whole continent having an AIDS problem as the joke. Conflating all of these extremely different instances under the heading of 'cancel culture' does more to muddy the topic than provide any useful insights. As does ignoring instances where the subject remained a persona non grata and we still agree with that decision. The whole thing seemed to work backwards from the premise of modern cancel culture being bad rather than taking an actual historical and sociological view of the practice.

Only difference is Rushdie did the Middle Eastern equivalent of Holocaust denial, dug up some obscure text from ancient times and tried to pass it off as legitimate despite him not having any degrees let alone being a historian. @@bebopuk There were some forgeries made in the 12th century called "the verses of the cranes" which the forger back then claimed were "apart of the Quran" it was dismissed and nobody paid it any attention cause that's all it was a forgery. Some British historians touched on these forgeries in the 18th century again, but again nobody paid much attention to it. rushdie basically dug these up and went around claiming they were real (cause he's an atheist and wanted to "trigger the Muslims, and he of course got the response he was looking for), similarly to how Afro-centrists attempt to claim they were Egyptians, or liberals claim there were tons of black people who were royalty in Victorian England

I think you misunderstood something. It wasn't far right Muslims that hated Rushdie. All Muslims hated and still do hate him. The "Satanic Verses" as a word weren't even known by Arabs and was uttered by westerner's who used it despite not even understanding that it was a lie by idolaters of the time. Not to mention that Salman wrote anything and everything he could to rile up Muslims, from the use of the names of the Prophet's wifes as brothel girls, to using deragtory words used by the crusaders and the name of Sala-din as a the devil. Salman used to write about how bad the USA was and their controversies but he then did this. It's like Martin Luther King declaring his love for slavery, or JFK appreciating the FBI. It's actally fortunate that most people didn't read the book. because if they did, Petitions to have him publicly excuted would have likely been raised.
