FYI: Those tracks are not abandoned, they are part of the Lake Whatcom Railway, and are still in use for tourist rides! The inner rails on the trestle are not narrow gauge, but are called guard rails to keep train cars in the unlikely event of derailment from falling into the water.

The Lake Whatcom Railway has been waiting to buy back the portion of the line that's been left neglected for years, but the damn hippies keep holding out.

That would make a beautiful shortline tourist attraction railroad

+Joseph Karper Yes for sure. Who wouldn't want to spend the afternoon on a scenic train ride skirting a glacial lake. They may do that still today but only a few times a year. I am not sure. (There is a train in Acme WA I believe that uses this track) I think this particular length of track would only give people a 30 minute ride each way. I would like at least a 2 hour ride no matter where it went--its just fun being on a train.

+Joseph Karper BTW why don't you post some of your songs on your channel. Do just one and the rest will follow. It will help you focus and I would like to see it.

A few years back I went with a friend of mine who bought a speeder from the barn near that trestle. Rode from the barn to where the track ended in someone's back yard. This track is former NP btw.

Yes, there is a tourist train that uses those tracks but not sure if they use the tracks up to the lake, they might turn back before that. There are shots of the steam train crossing a curved trestle over the water though maybe in the 1970’s or 80’s. So they did use the track up to the lake at one time. It has been in operation since 1970 when the new Burlington Northern abandoned the line. The tourist train only uses about 3 or 4 miles of track, the rest is gone.

Those bridges are not abandoned. They are part of the lake Whatcom railroad. Belonging to Mr Frank Culp. A greedy developer got a judge to give him a section of Franks trackage rights. Now Franks rail line is severed in half. The home owners along the lakefront section of rail line are trying to steal Franks waterfront property thru adverse possession . They have literally taken over his land. It is all very sad to see.

Seeing that these bridges are not in service it would be the perfect place to go fishing. Or get a rail speeder.

Those aren't dual gauge tracks on the trestles. The inner set of a rails are used as guard rails. Should a train happen to derail on the trestle, the guard rails would catch the stray wheel(s), and prevent them from wandering off the side of the trestle and dumping the train into the water.

Did you go for a swim too?

ricker Brrrrrrrr.... It's way too cold at least just yet. Although it never really gets all that warm. We usually get temps about 3 days a year in the 80's. Lake Whatcom is truly an awesome lake but it is almost totally ignored and not used by anyone for anything.I used to have a bowrunner and would go out on it every day but they don't allow two stroke engines on it anymore and they even want to ban all boats now to prevent pollution.
