Hi Dave and Ash, we did celebrate Guy Faulks Day here in the US up until the revolution. In 1775, Washington had been placed in command of all the troops fighting the British and he outlawed the troops from celebrating the day. So it might have been a natural progression for us to carry on some of those traditions to the Fourth. Actually, many of the first generation of Americans called it The Glorious Fourth.

Vikings settled in Greenland in the 11th century and later moved to Newfoundland, an island in the North Atlantic in the Peninsula of Labrador, Canada. They did not reach terra firma in either present day Canada or US. The first English settlement in North America was in 1607 in Massachusetts. The first settlement of Spain was in 1565 in Florida. The French founded a city in Wisconsin in 1634.

King George III was king of Great Britain from 1760 (17 years before the American independence) until his death in 1820. He was referred to as the Mad King. King George had recurrent mental illnesses and in 1810 he had a final relapse and his son was named Prince Regent. The King died in 1820 and his son succeeded him as King George IV.

For our 4lth of July today it was just the two of us. For more than 20 years we've celebrated with a picnic at my sister's house, where she had a large, built in pool and a lovely big yard, etc. She died in December and the house was sold by Spring so no picnic. We're all still working on our "new normal." In answer to, I think Ash's query about what we Americans studied about history, when I was in school, we didn't have History as a subject, we had World Cultures, or Social Studies one grade - like 4th grade, then in 5th grade, we'd study American Cultures, and so on, through 12th grade. I'm old, but we studied English history extensively, learning about things like the Battle of Hastings and the Magna Carte, etc. I remember making charts of dates in British history that ended up being of worldwide significance. I distinctly remember getting bogged down in German/Prussian history and the endless wars. We studied more American history, of course. The Patriot was about American Independence, btw. Breathtaking, beautiful film. Various states have all kinds of different rules/laws about fireworks, what's legal, and even how old you have to be to purchase them. In recent years my own state has vastly loosened up on all of that so all through lastweek, but especially Wednesday, Thursday and on into the weekend, we've had competing neighbors, showing off who has more money to burn! We're in a little bit of a valley with mountains/hills on either side. There was a serious accident at a large fireworks display in Utah on the 4th. They were in a stadium and one side, with three sides with the audience. One firework didn't go off as planned, going rogue and shooting right into the stands. One young woman took a direct hit to her face and several others around her were injured.

We have Federal and state holidays so it is slightly more complex than the UK. Federal holidays are New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving and Christmas. You can negotiate your vacation time depending on the job/ profession. Many people trade off a slightly higher salary for a few more vacation days.

In addition to the 11 national holidays, a state can have its own holidays, which its state employees and (possibly) schools will get that day off as well. For example, Alabama has Jefferson Davis Day to commemorate the birth of the president of the Confederacy. Dave is right about Spain. When I grew up in California, in addition to teachings of the American Revolution from the English, along with some English history, we studied Spanish history as well, as we were part of it. When I moved to the east coast, friends and coworkers said they were exposed only to English history, so what is taught in history classes must be based on geographical history. BTW, the foundation of state laws were based on the European colonizer’s laws. For example, English and Spanish laws back in the day were very different on certain topics. That’s why women up thru the 1970s/80s who were married to wealthy men and getting a divorce would move to a state that was once part of Spain to file, as Spanish divorce laws gave women the right to 50% of everything, while the English laws weren’t so giving. Laws have since changed and been updated in the last few decades, but the basis of them are still steeped in English v Spanish practices in certain areas.

American workers should definitely get more time off but it isn't as dire as you guys suggested. There are 10 Federal holidays, including New Year's Day, MLK Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, President's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many jobs offer two weeks of vacation and increase to four weeks over time, in addition to personal and sick days. Still, I love the European approach to offering more time for workers to recharge and spend time with their friends and families.

I could be completely wrong, but I heard one of the reasons the British were not allowing the colonies to vote was the population and economy would eventually overtake the British. That would have shifted the government power base from the motherland to the colonies and parliament, and King George did not want that to happen.

IMO, they should read George Washington's Farewell Address too. It explains in a fairly easy to understand way, why it hasn't worked the way it was intended. Just a couple of examples. Stay out of foreign wars. Stay out of foreign politics. Focus only on foreign trade. Do not make permanent alliances, and not editing the Constitution without very careful consideration. Pretty much we have done, and still do everything those that created it warned us not to do.

Holidays are really determined by bargaining unions. I worked for a municipality and I had twelve holidays, twenty-five vacation days, four personal days, and twelve sick days which accumulated if your used less than the twelve allocated per year. The patriots (rebels according to the British) asked to be ruled directly by George III and not by parliament because they had no representation but George demurred because he felt it was contrary to the British constitution. A read a very interesting book about thee American Revolutionary War shown through the eyes of British military leadership and political powers of the day. 'Those Damn Rebels' by Michael Pearson BTW the American Revolution was also Americas first civil war because loyalists Americans fought against patriot Americans. I became interested in the history of the origins of the British Empire which was a long but fascinating book 'The English and Their History' by Robert Tombs.

In America, many jobs require you to have been with the company for at least a year (sometimes two) to qualify for one week vacation (40 paid hours) and 5 years to qualify for two weeks (80 paid hours). Some companies give no vacation time at all. And again, many companies pay for some national holidays, usually New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Six Days. Government workers also get President's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Columbus Day (Now called "Indigenous People's Day"), and I think a few others... but, if you work for a small company like me, they don't have to pay employees for holidays. I only get paid for Thanksgiving, that's it. Every other holiday, I lose money because I work construction by the beach, and they don't allow us scumbags to ruin their day by doing our job. They're millionaires and we're just the lowly working man, struggling to pay our bills. How dare us make a racket during their explosion festival... I'm saying, as an American, I would have rather worked today and get some money than have a barbeque on a Thursday, knowing I have to go into work tomorrow.

July 4th is another of our made up American holidays. We didn't have independence until Sept 3, 1783 when the treaty was signed and the war was over. Even if the lie that we declared independence on July 4, I can declare myself a mountain gorilla, it doesn’t make it true. The declaration doesn't make the act a fact. The war started a couple years before and ended 7 years later. That piece of paper wasn't even signed until August 2, 1776 and that was only a few. The other signatures weren't added until multiple other dates. It all breaks down to rich, slave owners wanted to collect taxes instead of pay them. They even lied to all the poor men who did the actual fighting. There was almost a second revolution because the average citizen thought there was no more taxes after we had won the war and multiple tax collectors were actually murdered when they came around. The new government was charging taxes to pay debts incurred by a war just like the monarchy had. Most of the taxes charged by the monarchy at the time were to pay for debts incurred saving the colonists while fighting the French. The rich people here didn't think they should have to pay for that.
