CORRECTION: The Manchester-Bury and Manchester-Altrincham were not freight-only lines. They had passenger services as well throughout their operation.
Correction 2: Manchester to Bury was third rail electric, and the Altrincham line was overhead supply
A short-form explainer video about how the Metrolink tram system in Manchester came about explaining the history of transit in Manchester and how it demonstrates that trams and mass transit is a feasible solution for cities in the North. While also exploring the planned future for the system and how it could incorporate Tram-trains to integrate the trams system with the existing national rail infrastructure.

Just to let you know Salford quays is pronounced solford keys yer it’s weird. But apart from that great video and well researched

Alringham to Piccadilly (and onward to Hazel Grove) and Bury to Victoria weren't freight lines they were useful and often busy EMU commuter lines, in the case of the Bury line in dire need of upgrading. The Metrolink conversion scheme just happened to offer a convenient way to raise the funds needed to bring both up to light rail standard.

I still think that the Manchester Metrolink should continue expanding including to Port Salford, Wythenshaw and Stockport. And I would like to go to Manchester to ride on the M5000 trams.

Wythenshawe Park and Wythenshawe Town Centre have been stops on the Metro since 2014.

Great video and summery but I just want to pick up on Salford Quays it is pronounced Sol not Sal and Quays is pronounced Keys so together it is Solford keys in speech but not in spelling.

And it won't go maybe bolton or wigan cos too far i know wigan is more long way. but im not sure manchester victoria will maybe go wigan on tram/train. i dont know if that true in the future? thanks and good work

So there was the type 68 that were identified 1000 numbers according to photos, then those were replaced by the current fleet identified by 3000 and 3100 numbers (3a and 3b I assume)? Does that mean this "other fleet" that had some different type of louder power system or motors was not a thing? I have been around trying to find some trains that allegedly had a similar drive system but I have come across nothing and I have started to think I am being pranked.

I'm unsure about how loud the older units were but judging that that originally T-68 were identified with 1000 numbers and the T68A's were identified with 2000 numbers so I assume the numbering mainly is about when the generation of a tram. And I can't find anything about how the other fleet was in terms of delivery method but judging by the fact they were made by separate companies and that the Bombardier systems quickly replacing the entire old fleet makes it quite probable that they did have a different electric motor or some sort.

T68 trams were identified 1000 numbers (for example 1021) T68A trams were identified 2000 numbers (for example 2001) and M5000 trams are identified 3000 and 3100 numbers ( for example 3009 and 3135) , 3a and 3b identify the cab so if a tram were to say on the front 3135a on the other cab at the end it would say 3135b
