www.history4humans.com/collec...
The Articles of Confederation proved to be so ineffective that it led to the Constitutional Convention and the writing of the Constitution that effectively created a whole new government for the young country. It was a reset!
In this episode students learn about why the Founders created such a weak national government in the Articles of Confederation, the problems that came from giving Congress no powers to tax, regulate trade, etc. and how Shays' Rebellion led to fears of mobocracy and anarchy. This led to the Constitutional Convention where leaders debated, disagreed, and eventually reforged the country under a new constitution. They learn about the Great Compromise, the 3/5 Compromise and how slavery was an embarrassing stain on the Constitution, and how the framers created a government to balance fears of a tyrannical government while guarding against people and mobs having too much power. After signing the Constitution, the Federalists and Anti-Federalists debated until the Federalist Papers won over enough supporters to have the new constitution ratified.
A powerful and important lesson for our students!
