Boglins were a series of toy puppets distributed by Mattel. The original run of Boglins was released in 1987 and had a fairly short run in the United States.
But overseas Boglins had a much longer life. Several series of large and small Boglins were released until 1994, with additional aquatic, Halloween, and baby themed Boglins released later into the line. Small solid 'Mini-Boglins' were also produced, akin to the M.U.S.C.L.E. figures also from the 1980s.

I had a Boglin. Drool. He came with me to college. I lived in the basement of a very nice Jamaican family. The mom would come downstairs sometimes to clean. One day, she accidentally came across the Boglin in the corner of a dimly lit room when I was out. According to her, they could hear her scream all the way down the street.

I really liked mini boglins here in the UK when I was a kid. Each one had a theme or quirk and a little back story, I particularly remember liking the boxer boglin and the samurai boglin. If I recall correctly, you didn't know which mini boglin you were going to get in a pack, and there were rare gold or silver colour variations too.

I had one of the smaller Boglins when I was a kid, I had it for many years, I even modified it as I got into doing special effects makeup; I added sharp teeth and improved the paint job on it making it downright terrifying. It got lost in the shuffle over the years but I loved that thing. If the Kickstarter pans out, I will likely buy a reissue of one of the more complex ones; I really had a lot of fun with that thing.

If you didn't have a Boglin and have wondered what they feel like, I'll explain. Imagine Jell-O jigglers. Dry. With a hint of rubber band. Because they were silicone based (I believe one of the first TPE-based toys, the trademark name on the material is irrelevant) they had massive elasticity. The eyes were plastic, relatively thin but sturdy, and had small studs extending back into the hand cavity which allowed kids to make them look around or, my preferred scare tactic, make them bulge out. They were painted with silc-based pigment paint which lasted quite long if kept stored well. Now ask me about Popples.... 🤣
@DisgruntledDoomer
@DisgruntledDoomer 4 жыл бұрын
How long was "quite long"? I remember being fascinated with the skin-material as a child; it was like nothing else on the market. However, some years down the road, I found a used boglin, and was really bummed out to find that its skin had flaked and chipped. Maybe the previous owner had "played rough" with it, but since then I have always imagined that that was the fate of every bogling in the end...

@@DisgruntledDoomer It actually varies with how it's been stored. Heat, UV, and humidity play a big role, as does (sadly) assembly line environment. If my memory serves, the earlier batches had better longevity (can't speak for post 1994), but as it often goes they started getting a bit cheaper later in life. I have one that looks and feels almost new (a little dry), but was kept in a house in a dark closet the whole time. Another I have was stored in a regular box in a storage unit in Florida. It feels powdery and like it will crack if you play with it. I haven't tried any restoration methods (and probably won't, I rarely do on softer rubbers and plastics like these) but I imagine a little mineral oil would help keep them stay supple, wiped well, followed by a light dusting of talc to prevent it from sticking. A lot I've seen were stored compressed in boxes and.. oof, it's not pretty. If you do try the mineral oil (or alternatively silicone oil, though it's only a theory of mine to be better) please do a small test in an inconspicuous spot and keep a towel handy. Like I said, I haven't personally tried either yet - only heard success second hand on the internet... So...... Yeah. If you're going to restore one (painting) keep in mind that you're going to likely need silicone based paint base and pigments (definitely don't use mica powder) and an airbrush to get the job done. If he's just going on your shelf in the collection as is, I'm happy you found one at all. 😁

@@DisgruntledDoomer And just a side note, I saw them back in the day losing paint only a few weeks from the store. I think it mattered a lot how they were warehoused and transported. Most decent kept ones I've seen lasted at least until the mid 2000s (80s models) and like I said, one of mine is still very nice. None feel "new" though 😔

OMG I can still remember the smell of the Boglin! Easily one of my favourite toys as a kid!

Sectars were awesome. I had a bunch of them. I only had one Boglin, though, and it didn't hold up well. Much like the foam latex of the original puppets from "The Dark Crystal", the artificial rubber cracked and disintegrated over time, and now it looks much scarier than even it was intended to.

35 years ago my girlfriend tool my friend Droll the Boglin out for a ride. We'd stop somewhere like a park or marina for a walk and she would swaddle "our baby" in a little blanket and carry him with us on our walk. Then we'd stop and she would smile and talk baby talk to Drool and wait for a kind passer-by to stop and take a look... You can imagine what happened. What fun. She ended up taking Drool on a trip with her to California and I never saw him again... I really miss the little rubber bastard.

I remember having a Boglin as a kid, drool i think. Was so cool the faces and such you could do with it. I used him alot as a huge ghost for my Ghostbusters toys to capture.
