Take note, a thoroughly _pagan_ celebration to a Roman idol-god, Saturn, was slapped with a new label called "Christmas", though it was still heathen to the rotten-core! --- All costumes derived from pagan traditions! You are correct. In order to spread Christianity the popes took over certain pagan holidays and made them their own. There are some Christian sects that do not celebrate Christmas.
