The 1934 Chrysler was just as much an engineering masterpiece as the previous 1924 Chrysler. But an aerodynamic car is only relevant if driven on straight, level, multilane highways built for high speed which did not exist until the 1950s. The real success for Chrysler Corp during the 1930s was the Plymouth whose sales increased every consecutive year from 1930 to 1937.

Unlikely that Chrysler used consumer focus groups to preliminary judge public acceptance of this design.

People dug the formal look. Airflow appeared stripped of grandeur.

Aerodynamics held little value when considering the poor roads at that time...no multilane highways existed so only 50 mph was possible to drive safely.

The first American car with aerodynamics. The French already had the Citroën and the Germans had the Volkswagen...

The Airflow debuted in 1934, the VW Beetle in 1936. The Beetle body in many ways copied the Airflow body - the sloping front, the "fast" back. The Airflow had a unitized construction from top to bottom. The Beetle "semi" unitized. The body, absent the fenders, was welded together in one piece. It was however bolted to a "pan" in the center, which had a subframe attached at the front, and the rear. The pan was reinforced on each side with small, light, I-beam-like rails. I could be mistaken but I believe the underside of the Airflow was, unlike the Beetle, welded to the main body.

The Airflow was too far advanced for the United States. The car probably would’ve gone over well in Europe.

The Europeans heavily taxed automobiles based on engine displacement...this car would have been too big and expensive. Also, European roads at that time were more primitive than American roads.
