I think Arab culture promoted and encouraged the drinking of coffee but they didn't invent it. According to the legend it was an Ethiopian shepherd boy who tried boiling coffee beans but found them to be too bitter to eat. However the water he used boil the beans..............

Just 2 generations ago in Türk western Balkan people didn't afford coffe so only the elderly were served while having guests.

Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia by Ethiopians. It’s popularity spread via Yemen; but the proof of its origin is the name in Arabic ‘Qahwa’. This happens to be the name of the coffee producing region in Ethiopia.

Thoroughly enjoyable discussion. The brother was very generous with his knowledge and shared some wonderful anecdotes regarding the long history of coffee. Thank you.

From a semi-connoisseur with a long-running experience journal, thank you for this discussion ❤ interesting in so many facets of the history, including the interplay between global commerce, intense competition over establishing spheres of influence, and coveting strategic goods of value like coffee and the pre-coffee-craze of tea (which, by the way, the Chinese imperial place exercised a monopoly thereupon until small-scale Russian, French, Dutch smuggling and finally the Opium Wars).

What are you talking about? Coffee is indigenous to Ethiopia, not Yemen. The plants are indigenous to Ethiopia. Stop stealing from us.

Coffee was not discovered in Arab Yemen, but Ethiopia. There’s a strong coffee culture in Ethiopia and perhaps the Arabs may have introduced it to the rest of the world. This is the truth!

To our Ethiopian brothers and sisters, relax. He clearly stated that it was birthed in Ethiopia, brewed in Yemen and became an art in Turkey. I also always wondered why as Arabs, Yemeni coffee isn't really popular even though it's so good and its next to us and my question got answered. I think if Yemen would become stable there would be a proper infrastructure for coffee production and we would Yemeni coffee everywhere.

No bro, coffee was invented, beans were discovered. What westerners drink was invented in Yemen as a drink, then perfected it before the largest commodity trade was taken over by Europeans from the arabs
