Son of Flubber was also made within his lifetime. He also considered adapting Bambi's Children though put it on hiatus to focus on new material (a comic book version was made however). Disney also made an audiobook that posed as a sequel to The Jungle Book as a testing ground but it sold poorly. He didn't seem quite as dead set against sequels as much as he thought they weren't as promising an approach as proper new projects. The main reason the DTV sequels seemed to be made was because this wasn't quite the case at the time, their original films were bombing while stuff with their old faces was selling.

I can't help but feel the DTV marketing might have worked better if: 1. They valued quality over quantity and invested in a smaller amount of projects they could put more time and effort (and likely budget) into. 2. They marketed them for what they were, more humble companion pieces, and didn't slap a big '2' or '3' on most of them like you were expected to treat them with the same reverence as Disney's often revolutionary original films. Bambi 2 REALLY should have kept its working title 'Bambi and the Great Prince' for example.

I'm glad that not EVERYTHING in that pile of DTV shlock was terrible. And honestly, for all the sequels that did NOT get made, I think one that could very have easily lent itself to a sequel was 'The Great Mouse Detective' (think of it as being called 'The Hound of the Mousekervilles'); not as a cheap DTV rehash or half-assed story, but one that has a similar feeling and as much of a right to be on the big screen as 'The Rescuers Down Under' and 'Fantasia 2000'. I think that could have been phenomenal! But nooooooooooooo! We had to get garbage like 'The Fox and the Hound 2', which, given the original was something from Disney's dark age, was the biggest indicator to me, as a kid, that they were desperately grasping at straws. And personally, I wish I could just fast-forward right now past these pointless live-action remakes of 'The Lion King' and the like. (Unless the results of other, lesser-known-but-more-deserving-of-a-remake properties turned out to be good, but otherwise, bleh!)

@Nick Sorenson I wish the same thing. Because while Disney doesn't have the best track record for sequels (and the worst of them were nothing but huge embarrasments to their image), we've seen this year how (literally) dangerous toxic fandoms can get with their hate. I'm one who tries to keep an open mind. I mean, when I first heard the announcement of Bambi 2 as a kid, I was dreading it-especially after I just finished seeing Mulan 2! The first movie was super important to the company's legacy, and I could only imagine the worst if it was given the same treatment. But no! It ended up being exactly what a sequel (or in its case, midquel) should be: expanding on the lore of the story while paying homage to what made the original so iconic! It might not have been perfect, but for a midquel made over 50 years after the original, the people behind it did the best they could at the time and pulled it off for the most part.

@@jacobbelow4136 Poetic considering the original film bombed due to the war, while video sales of it and Bambi II were earning Disney back a lot of money during their infamous 2000s era. You can kinda see from that why Disney saw potential in the sequels, their old faces had draw appeal and they needed it then. The key however was that Bambi's sequel had heart and effort.
@jacobbelow41366 жыл бұрын
ToonReel001 Precisely. It was being made for the right reasons!
@ToonReel0016 жыл бұрын
@@jacobbelow4136 Well I have no doubt it was made primarily for money (them using the more marketable fawn Bambi over adapting the novel's sequel was another hint) just the people charged with it did actually want to make it a heartfelt project regardless. I feel like the sequel practice might have worked if they had a similar amount of common sense, let's say a more moderate amount of sequels with a willing creative team that is given space for proper time and effort put into them to make them memorable companion pieces. Then they would have had continued draw appeal and kept making money, rather than a flourish of sales at first then customers wondering what the hell they were thinking.
@jacobbelow41366 жыл бұрын
@@ToonReel001 Yeah, the heart and motivation is what separates Bambi 2 from being in the same vains as the Fox and the Hound 2, which ALSO uses the characters in their baby animal form for easy marketability and ultimately has NOTHING to do with the original apart from name recognition! When Diva reviewed 'Hunchback of Notre Dame 2' and brought up how the only reason for its existence was to be a fix-it fic meant to resolve the complaint about Quasimodo not getting the girl, she made what I think is a really good summary: "Even with that part of the first movie being a testament to how Quasimodo is a genuinely good person rather than a self-proclaimed nice guy, I can understand why the writers of the sequel would want to let him have his own romance. But it should be something that comes organically out of the story itself, not just be the bottom line for it. But because it doesn't, the story is just a hastily-put-together framework for the clichéd boy-meets-girl-under-false-pretenses trope and everything that follows, and Madeline never exists as a character in her own right, just a love interest for Quasimodo. The fact that he's deserving of a love interest doesn't make her any less of a trophy." I think it can also apply to any trend of sequels/reboots/anything in a money-gyser field. I understand that this is a business and it needs to be profitable, but the profit shouldn't be the be-all-end-all for a products existence, otherwise people are going to be disappointed with the quality, and it's going to reflect badly on a company's repuation.

11:41 Yeah, I remember seeing that trailer several times on my Dumbo 60th anniversary DVD as a kid and for many years I was so confused as to why I couldn't find anything else from that film outside of that trailer until I found out about it's cancellation one day while browsing online to find any other information about the project. None the less I am now relived that they cancelled the sequel because it and the upcoming remake would never top the original :)

With The Marvel Cinematic Universe having an entire expansion into a franchise with a lot of standalone films, sequels, prequels, spin offs & TV series, it make sense because that's how it is in the comic books of the Marvel Universe. 👌🏻 the more Marvel gives us new stories & characters in the comic industry, Disney will continue to bring those new stories & characters to life on the big screen.

Dumbo 2 was proposed and cancelled LONG before the DTV sequel run ended. The fact Dumbo 2 never got off the ground despite the heavy promotion and supposed care put into it (even having one of the original film's creative members) leaves me thinking there were maybe creative differences, and Disney executives tried to turn it into a generic contemporary cash cow while the people in charge insisted on something that didn't tarnish the original. According to sources, if so, it wouldn't be the only time the people at Disneytoons legitimately tried to make a good sequel but the top dogs forced their hands.

The big main problems the majory of the Disney Direct-To-Video sequels: 1) Very cheap and poor animation comparted to the original, this especially knowest with the tradicional cel animated flims. 2) The story feels (for the most part) just a rehash of the plot of the original flim. 3) Some of the movies such UHHH's Boring World aren't really movies, there are just a bunch of episodes of scapped TV shows. 4) It introduces characters that ranged from being copies of the well know ones to downright unlikable. 5) They (pretty much) only exist to cash in on the success of the original flims. 6) Forgettible songs. 7) For some reason, Tarzan 2 and Lilo & Stitch 2 are laybed as the second flim from there respective series, despite being the *third* movie.
