Essex, my home county for the past decade, has been shaped by a wide variety of cultures, from Ancient Britons, Danes, Saxons, Normans, Vikings and Romans over the centuries. Situated in the south east of England, between London and the North Sea, with an area of 3,670 square kilometres and housing a population of 1.842 million people recorded as of 2019. It consists of 12 districts, with Chelmsford being its capital and two unitary authorities of Southend On Sea and Thurrock.
Listen to the history of Essex and some interesting facts.

I have a lot of ancestors that came from Essex. I also have two ancestors that came on the Mayflower whose children married each other ... Myles Standish and John Alden, both quite famous in Thanksgiving stories. Myles didn't come from Essex, but John may have been. There's much debate. For two such well-known historical figures, their parentage and background has to be the worst I've encountered on my family tree thus far, and I've uncovered hundreds of ancestors.

I live in Rayleigh, the castle would have been hugely imposing from the flat land to the west. And @7:04 that isn't greenstead church. Nice video though 👍

These are the Saxon seaxes, coat of arms for the ancient kingdom of the East Saxons. The shape and the hook was there to draw the invading boats closer so they can be attacked upon. The Arabian Scimitar is a different kind of sword. The curved blades were first developed in the east, either in ancient egypt or in china, and were picked up on by the west. So there are many variations of curved swords.

BCE (Before Common Era), it first appeared in a book by Johannes Kepler as annus aerae nostrae vulgaris (year of our common era). The term 'Common Era' itself can be found in English as far back as 1708. From around mid-19th Century (mid 1800s) they have been widely used by Jewish religious scholars. And since early 20th Century (which is early 1900s) the terms have also been widely used in academic and scientific publications. Thanks for listening to the episode though.
