Back in the 1950's, a friend of mine had a Monarch brand motorbike with a 2 cyl, 2stroke boxer engine mounted with the crankshaft transverse. Being a 2 stroke, both cylinders fired simultaneously, the only advantage was balance. I did run very smoothly.

Really nice filming, thank you. Maybe a Zundap and Ural in part two? Or the Harley copies of BMW?

I hope transversely mounted flat twins make a comeback. I’ve never riden a bmw but I asume they’re smooth af, but Ive never liked the exposed cylinders. By the way that motorcycle at 2:39 has some really cool front suspension. I’ve never seen girder forks like that.

Sixties BMWs were derided in the big bike magazines for their clunky three-speed gearboxes. Nevertheless, they were smooth, bulletproof and exceptionally reliable. My brother towed me around the streets of Adelaide in his R75 sidecar rig. He deliberately ran me over every corner he could find.

@@53jed Sixties BMWs had 4 speed gearboxes. Main reason for the clunky box was that incoming gearbox shaft rotates at same speed as the engine. "Normal" motorcycles has a primary speed reduction before the clutch. Should know as I designed 5-speed boxes for sidecar racers.

ABC had like BMW an aeroplane origin. An offspring from Sopwith. Once found an ABC cylinder in a scrapyard. All of it turned, very thin cooling fins. In the era of aero rotary engines all parts had to be machined and balanced to keep vibrations as low as possible. Guess it made the ABC expensive.

Your videos are always enlighenting. I don't believe I've ever seen a bike with 'total loss' oiling and I'm sure I've never ridden one. In my mind they seem like a disaster waiting to happen ... how is the oil dispensed with in a way that's not dangerous for the rider, not to mention other motorists?
@johncallow222 жыл бұрын
Two stroke engines use total loss lubrication.
@MadChalet2 жыл бұрын
@@johncallow22 I hadn't thought of that. With a two stroke the oil is burned ... with a four stroke?

bmw is the way to do it, but if you can't make a shaft drive, 90 degree 'el' twin also good. why so many people wandered into in-line opposed twin is simply depressing.
