Walter Besant was a novelist and historian, and his topographical and historical writings, ranging from prehistoric times to the nineteenth century, were probably best known through the detailed 10-volume Survey of London published after his death. This earlier single volume covers, in less depth, the whole period from prehistory until the 19th century. The book appears originally to have been written for boys, and, indeed, the chapters are called 'Lessons'. However, it is a very readable history and provides a fascinating insight into both London's past and the government of the City at the time the book was written (1894). (Summary by Ruth Golding)

A stunning & detailed rendering of London (the city I was raised in, am now in Canada). Ms. Golding's narration is magnificent-it alone makes this audiobook a classic for the ages. One can close their eyes and, as it were, walk among the Ages of London.

This was, of course, written before the discovery in 1954 of the pagan temple of Mithras, (built around 420 ad) during the clean-up after the Blitz. It was discovered 7ft below street level between what is now Queen Victoria St and Walbrook. It can be visited, wonderfully preserved, beneath the Bloomberg European HQ building.

This must’ve been written 100 years ago- I’ll have to look it up. Anyway, the book ends at 7:09, and the rest is made up of authors notes.

More than a century out of date (the pro colonization remark lands a bit differently these days) but a nicely detailed look at the history of a great city.
