The History of Match Game

Match Game is one of my favorite game shows, so I thought it'd be fun to do a video going over the entire history of the show.

so Apparently there was a Pilot done in 1972 which was Hosted By Chuck Woolery For ABC. Chuck also wrote the Match Game theme and sold it to Edd Kahloff. but it was altered. No footage of the Pilot seems to exist. but the theme does

You forgot the canadian version on the comedy channel in 2012 it only ran for 1 season but it did get 60 episodes which is pretty nice

“Ugly Edna” was ultimately replaced by “Ugly Ulfrea” because, in Gene’s words, “we found that we were inadvertently causing some problems for young people named Edna.”

That ACCORDION answer was given by the same contestant on the previous show. Here was the question: The salesman said "That caterpillar must be an athlete. He just bought 100 sneakers and a BLANK."

Another original aspect of Hollywood Squares that did not make it to the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour. Originally and after, if you were incorrect on a question, your opponent got the square, UNLESS the square led to a win. On the hour, probably because of time constraints, if you got it wrong, the other player got the square no matter what. Many fans did not like this.

I had mixed feelings about Alec Baldwin MATCH GAME. He didn’t look as if he cared if anyone won or lost, but as if he was just hosting for a paycheck.

I think part of the reason for that is because for the most part, “game show host” isn’t really a career the way it used to be. A lot of folks in recent years are actors first and game show hosts second or third, which I’m not a huge fan of

The Alec Baldwin version came as close to the original except for the unneeded, excessive raunchy answers, especially bodily fluid answers.

@@myprizegarage I think it was the Rust movie set shooting that did in Match Game 2016. Once Baldwin was implicated, ABC canceled Match Game as a precaution.

ABC says they were gonna cancel the show anyway regardless of the shooting. There were only two episodes of “Match Game 21” if you will, and those were just leftovers from 2020. The last two episodes aired in July, 9 months after the rest of the final season. The shooting on the Rust set happened in October, so I do think they had indeed already made a decision by then. Since I figured Match Game’s cancellation and the Rust shooting had nothing to do with each other in my research, I decided not to include it in the video, because I generally like to avoid heavy topics in my videos if I can

@@myprizegarage ABC might already have plans to bring it back. If not, CBS may just jump at the chance to revive it if their Lingo relaunch pans out.
