From what I hear, they are fiercely nationalistic and want nothing to do with Romania. In fact, they call their own language MOLDOVAN which in fact is not, it is nothing but Romanian with 2 or 3 little changes. I asked my neighbors and they adamantly said: ""We are not Romanians and have nothing to do with Romanians." To me it is all politics. The people of Europe have spent thousands of years battling and killing each other over stupid labels. That's the way I see it. If all these tribes of Europe spent more time building something concrete and less time on STUPID games of identity they would fare much better.

@@gigikontra7023 Well...then you need to do some research. I live in Italy surrounded by Moldovans. As I said, my own neighbors to one side are Moldovans and I have had these conversations with numerous Moldovans for a long time. So if none of this is true, then Moldovans are good liars as this is not my information but what I've heard from Moldovans themselves.

There are Vlachs all across the Balkans outside of Moldova and Romania. With Vlach Shepherds and farmers moving as far north as Ukraine and as far west as Poland. Though in small numbers. And as far south as Greece and Albania. You can see stateless communities of Vlachs in every Balkanic country and every country that borders Moldova and Romania. Vlachs have migrated everywhere. It is said one in four Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks have at least one Vlach ancestor in the last 700 years.

I typed a super long comment basically saying how cool I think this part of history and the world is. But I think I can boil it down to: I read/watch _a lot_ about the Greeks and Romans and I hear a lot of these people and places mentioned in the background as the "barbarians" or places the larger empires were trying to conquer. Basically, I want to learn more about the places that were on the borders and frontiers of the Greek and Roman empires and what the people were doing at these times as well as all of the nomadic groups/kingdoms/empires that came through and where they went/who they conquered.

I was born and raised in Chisinau, and what I can tell you about the current Republic of Moldova, as anyone can also draw the conclusion by watching this highly-accurate video, is that it is nothing but the legacy of the now, fortunately defunct, Soviet Union. The borders of the republic are nothing but what Khrushchev drew after Stalin authorized him to do so. OK, except the western border on Prut River, but which the Soviets in 1940, just like the Russian Empire in 1812, re-drew as the line of separation that split Moldova in half. The Principality of Moldova's legacy is that the western half that remained still independent united with Wallachia to set the foundation for what would become modern day Romania. In fact, the Principality of Moldova is a cornerstone, maybe the strongest one, of modern day Romania.

Excellent documentation! A few facts could be added. The Austrian Empire received a nordic part of Moldova, called Bukovina, from the Ottoman Empire for a while, the region being germanized. Bukovina is now split between Romania and Ukraine. Moldovans speak a language that is identical with Romanian. A Latin language that proves the continuity of population from Dacian-Roman mix despite the numerous migratory waves. The explanation of this continuation is that those invaders often were just a military elite governing the country and naming it after them. But not enough to assimilate the locals. Much like the Ottoman dominance. In 1939 Stalin and Hitler agreed to part Europa including Romania. Soviet Union got half of Moldova since then. Bulk of it is the Republic of Moldova but also includes lands to the south and north of it, that are now incorporated in Urkaine. The people in Romania, east of Carpathians (center of the country) are also Moldovans. During Soviet Union, Moldovans used Cyrilik alphabet for Romanian language in paralelel with Russian but returned to Latin alphabet afterwards. The flag of Moldova has the same colours as that of Romania and in the 90s the same anthem. The reunification with Romania is prevented by Russian troops stationed in Transnistria but will eventually happen. Many Moldovans have dual Romanian citizenship to travel and work in EU. At some point, most of the government was comprised of Romanian citizens.

My constructive criticism: 1. Address what Moldova refers to (it means two very distinct things: it refers to a region, most of which is in Romania, with its cultural capital in the Romanian city of Iași; and it also refers to a newly formed country, which is a smaller part of the historical region of Moldova - it's basically the chunk of the region of Moldova which was conquered by the Soviet Union, with its capital in Chișinău). Most Moldovan history in this video refers to the entire regional entity, not just the tiny new country. 2. When mentioning all of those peoples who came through the area, it would be nice to say something about them (e.g. an Iranian tribe which was very mobile due to its horse riding culture; a Turkic tribe that joined the Mongolian invasions; etc.)

@@KaiZen8888 ” And in that perioad of time Romania didn't exist.” - actually the term Romania is much older than the international-recognized modern state ”Romania”, and was used especially by Moldovan cultural elites to designate the group of lands inhabited by Romanians: Wallachia, Moldova, Transylvania. For example: ”Chant de la Roumanie” by Alecu Russo, 1850. Or Popescu-Scriban, writing (1838) that the best name for Moldova is Moldo-România because is inhabited by Romanians. Or Stephen the Great, naming his country MoldoVlahia, and the inhabitants - Wallachians (=Romanians).

The country's name is the Republic of Moldova. Moldova was a medieval country that united with Wallachia and formed Romania in 1859. Before that, in 1812, the eastern part of Moldova has been occupied by Russia. The modern Republic of Moldova still remains a chunk of land taken from medieval Moldova (and hence Romania) which tries to get to EU, but since Russia thinks that this is their are on influence it opposes the unification with Romania or EU integration.

Not even in the time of ussr they not named Moldavia, the name was Moldavian sovietic republic! Only in the 1991 they came with the name Moldova which is inaccurate, Romania even was the first to recognize their independence, should opposed to name Republic of Moldova because implies they had some rights in the Moldova lands which united in 1859, which is not true. Republic of Moldova is not the heir of Moldova (which participated at creation of Romania's state).

My family comes from Suceava, the capital of the most respected and famous King, Stefan the Great. A few years ago , i made a genetic test, some family members followed. The interesting result was: 60% (+/-) non slavic balkanic, which can be considered dacian/getae; around 20% (+/-) gemanic (goth), and strangely enough finnic about 20% (+/-) (not sure why). Just a small amount (even it does not summ up) is mixed. These results reflect exactly the history of that region. Dacia, Getae, Celtic, Goths, etc...

Great video explaining the history of this country. Moldavian history seems very interesting especially with how it had the first ‘cities’ in Europe and the multiple ethnicities that were settled and nomadic. What happened to the Celts who settled there and who were they absorbed by and the last date we know they were there. Also have there been any discoveries of Dacian, Celtic or nomadic artifacts or ‘treasure’ in this country?
@sergius993
@sergius993 Жыл бұрын
Hey, man! As a Moldovan I will try and answer. The Celts were mostly living as the neighbours of the Dacian tribes. There were constant wars between them, but the Celts never actually conquered the Carpathian basin. They began to fade away into history once the Romans began to arrive in the region. As for the artifacts, yes, there are plenty of them in the museums of Moldova and Romania. Our ancestors definitely had to deal with a lot of „visitors” ). There were numerous Dacian towns and fortresses. For example, the ruins of Sarmizegetusa, the capital of the Dacian Kingdom, still survive and can be visited.

Well, with regards to what happened to the Celts: in the S of the Romanian part of Moldova, there is a county called Galati. People still debate if it's from a slavic word or a celtic one like in the case of Galatia in Asia Minor, but if you look at genetics, the people in this area, tend to have about 5-7% celtic ancestry, which is more than double than that in the rest of the country. So although we don't have a clear answer, we have some pieces of the puzzle.
