At 34:13, talking about saving frames with the goomba, did you accidentally say you lost or saves time backwards? Or did I just misunderstand what was being said? Not criticizing either, it's a legitimate question. Thanks also for these awesome videos!

46:10 for those who don’t know, Dave Stieb was a pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1980s. His most infamous accomplishment, and what Salt is referring to here, occurred in September 1988, when he had a no hitter broken up in the 9th inning with 2 outs and 2 strikes (basically the baseball equivalent of Pidgey’s motion control mishap) in back to back starts. The odds of this happening are around 1 in 240 million

I mean by that logic, nobody would care to learn anything at all about things they haven't already experienced unless a creator of some sort frames it a certain way to keep a large audience engaged, which is a pretty sad thought. The story of this game's world record has always been interesting, I think Summoning Salt is simply helping us see what was always there! I do agree that the storytelling is amazing lol. I feel like the first sentence of your comment just feels uncomfortably similar to something like "I'm never going to space but I just spent an hour learning about Mars lol" which is depressing because lots of people act like everything they learn has to have some kind of immediate practical use, otherwise it's a waste of time. That's such an awful and destructive way to view information and knowledge lol :( I'm sorry, I'm just thinking out loud, I'm not accusing you anti-intellectualism or anything, but you got me thinking! This is a sentiment I see expressed far too often, the "Lol why did I just spend an hour watching a video about (insert legitimately interesting topic here)" like I dunno dude, because it's interesting? xD

I really love how when the runners are streaming, a lot of them celebrate by saying “WE did it!” It’s really refreshing to see communities where people are friendly rivals or are working together to beat records set by them or other people. It’s not nasty and people don’t get a big head about it.

@@simonmagus2199 Content creation has its own community which shares optimizations just like speedrunning. While you're looking for tips on how to improve audio quality you'll come across all sorts of, let's call them "audience optimizations". Take the video we just watched: there are a lot of comments praising Salt for making an entertaining video which kept them interested for 31 minutes while talking about a game which the commenter has never played. He has really optimized his content creation process in order to consistently deliver a high quality product. But where do you draw the line between optimizations like re-doing your voiceovers to remove mistakes, false starts, stuttering, weird slurping noises, etc, etc ,etc and so called "sociopathic" optimizations? That is a question every content creator has to face on their own. On one hand, saying "we did it" helps the friends you've made in chat during your journey feel involved, and recognizes their contribution....on the other hand, doing stuff like that helps viewer retention and increases revenue for your stream. So is it humble or sociopathic? I personally like to think that it depends on the streamer themself, and comes on a spectrum. Some streamers may feel 80% humble and 20% entrepreneurial, others may have those numbers flipped. You can't really know from the outside how another person feels, or what their true intentions are, so I have often found it best not to even try to find out, and to only focus on how a person makes you feel on the inside.

@@phaolo6 What is said is true, but I dont necessarily think the motive is to trick.. the runner is performing for the audience. Without being observed and admired, theres almost no point in a record. And they are there for the 1000s of runs that DONT succeed too. So I'm sure the runner starts to feel like the effort is a "we" thing.

It feels absolutely unreal seeing myself in this video. Although I never quite held a WR, I’d like to think that my personal best time proved to the community that Fade could indeed be contested with, as I made a mistake of about 5 seconds in 8-2 and still came within 3 seconds of his run. It’s awesome to see how much further the community has taken the game since then. BillyJoe is such a talented runner and I’m so happy to see his hard work paying off. Watching this was so nostalgic for me and definitely makes me more inclined to make a return to Mario Wii in the near future and leave my mark for good. >:)

Something I'm liking about this game's runs is they're pretty much entirely dev-intended mechanics, just executed very well. Even the autoscroller skip is just clever application of the Propeller Suit's intended uses combined with wall jumps. I absolutely adore that you mentioned Dave Stieb after your comment on the Jon Bois documentary. That series brought tears to my eyes, and this game being one of the most important of my early childhood made the out-of-nowhere reference to that monumental feat to describe the speedrunning achievements of this game was just the creme de la creme. Thanks, Summoning Salt.

I always love it when his love of baseball gets a chance to shine, and when he mentioned Dave Stieb i honestly couldn't tell if that was his baseball fandom talking or if he'd seen the Bois series about him and never, ever forgot about it like the rest of us.

Jon is unquestionable but in terms of production and writing I have to put LEMMiNO and EmpLemon, at least, above SS, whose writing is honestly starting to get a bit formulaic by comparison. It's serviceable, and he finds interesting twists to put on what is essentially the same story every time, but...it doesn't hold a candle to the things Jon Bois has made me feel.

Newest world record as of 01/17/24 is 21:52.167 by “JoeCena.” BillyJoe in 3rd at 21:53, Skippy and Pidgey are in 5th and 6th with 22:01s

Holy shit Pidgey's sequence near the end literally nearly made me tear up. Those kinds of mistakes can be sooo demotivating and devastating, but he bounced back from it and through his efforts managed to achieve the victory he was so close to before. Honestly I feel like I'm practically about to cry even now just thinking about it, this video as a whole was surprisingly powerful.

IIRC in the last video, something like this happened and the runner never recovered from it. So all the more impressive Pidgey bounced back in so short a time.

“Pidgey had pulled a Dave Stieb.” Dorktown Secret Base viewer confirmed. I was _just_ thinking during this, “you know what? There’s a lot of similarity here to Dorktown, which is _definitely_ not a bad thing.” It’s a pretty masterful way to present statistics and records, and I applaud you for bringing that level to speedruns!
