I'm born in Paris, I've always lived in Paris and my heart broke when I saw the spire collapsing. Many won't understand why many of us cried for "a bunch of stones" but it's really something else for us Parisians. As a catholic, I was also very concerned the holy thorn crown would be lost, but fortunately it was saved !

Even to me as a Scandinavian atheist, I'm saddened by this disaster and wish it restored as well as possible. Even with your holiest relics saved, the value of the other art lost to the flames can not be measured in money, I am grateful for having had the privilige to visit the cathedral twice and both times humbled by it's greatness, and awed by the skill, dedication and genius of the artisans and builders who made it and it's priceless interior furnishings. All now living Europeans owe those medival craftsmen the duty to restore it.

But you will not always have Me. 8She has done what she could to anoint My body in advance of My burial.… Rebuilding the cathedral is a call to all who see here that God is not yet dead and thus have hope.

@Bloginton Blakley you cannot remove the poor people completely. The only difference with the poor now and the poor then is that the poor now enjoy priviledges that even the rich prior did not have. The only difference is the standard of living of the poor now is indirectly influenced by the rich. Nobles of the eras prior cannot even afford to have good quality meat with salt in it, but the nearest dumpster nowadays has that with random fries to boot and an expiration tag in it. Also, remember that Jesus said a key verse to Judas Iscariot on the time Mary Magdalene broke an expensive perfume on her feet: you will ALWAYS have the poor, but will not have me ALWAYS. Jesus is more concerned of people believing in His Words as the Son of God and its propagation than the poor. Sorry but Social Justice just blinds your perspective.

The victors of wars would often tear down ancient monuments to discredit the local history and promote their own, or to even recycle the materials to build their own monuments! Luckily this building survived, unlike many others. Likely because it was built less than a thousand years ago as well, as times became softer and more civilized.

@@buffdude4281 The Vatican doesn't own every church or holy site. If they did, England (and other protestant countries) would be paying rent on all the churches they co-opted during the Reformation. France seized Church property during their revolutions, but made a compromise at a later date that while the State would maintain ownership and be responsible for upkeep, worshippers could still use the building for their religious ceremonies. Notre Dame and her upkeep is therefore the responsibility of the State, not the Church. Former ownership doesnt matter, France consented to liability when she retained ownership.

Since the spire was a 19th century addition that was inspired by Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", that would make it inspired by a work of fiction. Make of that what you will. Personally I feel that the new spire should not be an exact replica, it should blend with the existing Gothic architecture yes, but allow the building to evolve and possibly become greater than it was before.

This was best explanation yet, however, as I read the Concordance of 1801, The French Republic restored Catholic Rites to the Papacy not the actual properties that were looted or taken over by the State. (except for the cemeteries and relics) This was done by Napoleon to pacify the many still religious Catholics still living in France not to rise up against the coronation. Just an interesting note in consequences... when the Church issued its controversial indulgences which lead to the Reformation, the Papacy was originally intending the money to rebuild the Vatican in Rome, also crumbling. It was grossly corrupted by power players. I wonder how many tax deduction will be awarded for restoration of Notre Dame?

Twice the narrator refers to N.D.’s “Tin Roof”. It’s roof was sheathed in Lead,. In light of the toxic fallout created when the lead roof melted or vapourized, I wouldn’t be surprised if the new roof is made of tin, not lead. Both metals have very similar properties but Tin is not normally toxic. Historically,, tin is usually 7 x the cost of lead by weight. In English speaking countries the term “tin roof” refers to a tin plated, iron/steel sheet covered roof... when I suggest ND might opt for a tin roof, I mean almost pure tin, in molten sheets about 3/32 of a inch thick. It’s lighter than lead and if they decide on Tin, rhevarchitectsvand engineers will have to take into account the weight difference and make adjustments to ensure the collective weiegtv of the roof apples the same rate of compression on the buildings masonry.

Why do we say that notre dame is 850 years old how it was completed in 1345? Why do we count age from the start of construction?
