Government does not want to fix the problem, not at the expense of big companies that run this country.

At 34:00, Nestlé, General Mills, and Walmart as saviors for the health of the people is like expecting Exxon mobile and British petroleum to focus on cleaning up pollution in the air and on the land.

Actually bp is one of the leading funders of climate research and sustainable energy, which in my opinion makes the whole thing questionable too. I wouldn’t expect Nestle to do anything, hope they go bankrupt as people wake up slowly

Food was done better before monocrop colonization spread throughout the world. Inca had over 10000 varieties of potatoes, puebloian cultures had innumerable types of maize. A good food system builds soil, it's that simple.

I ordered this book, it’s incredible to think how food affects everything, how it represents everything. Thank you for sharing your knowledge gentlemen.

Vertical farming should replace a big portion of traditional farming You can harvest weekly and the size of a closet can yield 60 trays of sprouts monthly. Water saving can go up to 95% and is indoor labor. Land should be used mostly for fruits, olive, avocado and some veggies like squash and carrots. Cereals are overated anyway.

Dont forget rice, I think it’s a good grain.

@@tomasmuir9812 Not fully sure about that. Rice was good in a time where physical activity was common. Chinese were skinny eating rice but they used to burn hundreds of calories a day doing physical labor and walking. After eating the minimum amount of fruits and non starchy veggies to get enough antioxidants and vitamins i have no space left for more carbs unless i do some super intensive workout or try to get fat to be a sumo wrestler.

@@albertalbert7958 Speak for yourself, according to my fitbit I burn 3000 calories in a day, that's without any exercise. If I don't eat a high calorie carb like rice, it is extremely hard to reach 3000, trust me I've tried. Sure I could eat a kilo of nuts or a bowl of olive oil but that doesn't feel great.

@@tomasmuir9812 I eat a few fruits, let's say 1 apple, 1 pear and a cup of berries, some broccoli, zucchini, squash, green bananas, carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes. Yogurt, avocado and some nuts and I'm already over 600 calories of carbs. So you can have all my breads and pizzas. You can store all the extra fat as well.

There's no defending them Dr Hyman. If? they don't know they are supposed to know. There's enough information out there and it is their job to know and their moral obligation to ignore the bribes (I mean donations) and to do what's best for the people. Not just for the Corporations and donors. To do what's best for the planet.

That’s assuming they have morals...which they don’t. The only way big cops will change is buy consumer behavior. Im afraid. Are we strong enough to pay the organic prices long enough to crash them to the ground? So the organic companies can gain enough traction and stop being swallowed up by big corps?

Mark, The Rodale Institute recently published an article on that subject. Here is the name of the article: What Biden’s Climate Plan Means For Regenerative Ag - Rodale Institute I encourage everyone to get the template letter, included in the article, and send it to your Congressional District Representatives as well as Senators; make them aware and show your support for regenerative agriculture. Thank you for all the great podcasts!

Why don't you interview Joel Salatin from Polyface Farm? Joel is a genuine organic, successful regenerative farmer who understands farming, unlike Bittman who is an academic just trying to flog another book.

Please don't say progressive!!!! We need to fix the FDA and the Agriculture Department and encourage them to finally do the right thing.. We have had administrations for 40 years (or more) that let money rule Washington. Don't fool yourself by thinking that the lobby money isn't effecting the current administration.

Hey Mark, it was this open progressive think that got us to where we are now. Mark Bittman may be academic smart but is a fool if he thinks this new administration will lead to any changes.

What I find concerning is that Mark Bittman doesn't look all that healthy. Is he applying his own advice to his life? Not so sure about that.

Yes, the ‘food system’ and ideas of what food is fit for health and which ones are not need to change. But getting it done with a soda tax??? I found this interview a large confusion and disappointment. The book doesn’t hold out much hope of helpful information. It sounds like you could be advocating forcefully taking ‘control’ of society and jamming more half-baked and poorly informed ideals rather than truly informed and workable activities being implemented voluntarily already through actual practice of regenerative agriculture.

Here is why covid is considered a crisis where the food problem is not: our system has not grown up around covid, it has grown up around the food problem, and it is to a large extent built to deal with that
