The History of Portrait Painting

It is hardly surprising that in the history of what we call "art" today, the representation of the human being is the dominant genre, the preferred subject. After all, we prefer to deal with ourselves, don't we...?
The history of the portrait begins long before the mummy portraits of the Egyptians or the frescoes of the Greeks and Romans, and continues through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the postmodern era of our present day. Artists such as da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein and Rubens paved the way for the comprehensive depiction of the human being in his physical appearance, before the Impressionists, Cubists and Realists gradually liberated the portrait from the imitation of the outside world, the mimesis, with the beginning of the modern era.
