Jamy explains how the transition took place from the time of smooth rebars to Hérisson® rebar couplers: with unrivalled qualities of resistance, the rebar couplers ensure reinforced concrete with maximum safety. Concrete and steel have never been so intimately unified!

The trick is going to be lining the end of the coupler precisely against the face of the formwork. Otherwise, concrete will seep into the threads and require cleaning before the second rod can be attached.

This is obviously a European view of rebar history that is missing some American innovations. Note this from Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_L._Ransome In 1884 after experimenting with reinforced concrete sidewalks, Ransome patented (U.S. Patent 305,226) a system of ferro-concrete with square iron rods twisted to improve the bond, then developed a patented Ransome system for practical reinforced concrete construction. In 1886 Ransome built two small underpass bridges in the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco which survive today, and which are the first reinforced concrete bridges in North America, and among the first three or four in the world.

Terence Eagan I would also like to include the contributions of these two French innovators that developed some of the first ideas that would lead to reinforced concrete (béton armé) (ferro-cement) as early as the 1850's: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Monier en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph-Louis_Lambot en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7ois_Coignet

The Nevyansk tower did not use the modern idea of reinforced concrete. It used steel bars, yes. But, they are essentially dowels. They support the vertical weight of architectural attachments in shear. Reinforced concrete is a hybrid system utilizing the compressive strength of concrete and the tensile strength of steel. Nevyansk does not do that. That said, Nevyansk is an interesting structure.

very typical ignorance, which hides the home of many important technological achievements. the makers of the film forgot to mention the first usage of reinforced concrete. it was about 1725 in russia, in the tower of nevyansk.
