Nothing like the buzz and sea of human traffic at Richmond station when there's an AFL game on, that's the Melbourne I know. Arrive on an old Tait or Harris and wander across to the MCG with an esky of goodies for the game. Thanks for the detailed report, learnt a little more about an iconic part of Melbourne.

Thank you for a wonderful series of videos, delivered with charm, good humour and erudition! When I was a lad in Melbourne you could still go and see Barker Station, the inner suburban lines were all serviced by dogboxes, and Puffing Billy still ran from Ferntree Gully to Gembrook! You could also take the train to Healesville or Whittlesea, St Kilda or Port Melbourne, and passing through the tunnels from West Richmond to Jolimont was a joy beyond compare! My Dad used to take the family for a day out to Spencer Street Station to watch steam engines at work! (I've lived in London for almost 50 years now!) Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much Leslie, the comment (and your email, I'll reply as soon as I can) means a lot. I am super jealous of the experiences you have mentioned here, how cool it would be to ride a Dogbox to Barker Station today, or a train to Healesville, all incredible experiences! Of course, none of it compares to the London Underground, riding the tube is probably the number 1 thing on my bucketlist! Thanks again Leslie!

Part of why the old Richmond station was moved/replaced was that it was on a bend. The driver could not easily see the signalman (person) and as the station was so busy, it was considered dangerous.

Very good article, I’m too young to remember the old Richmond station but when I asked an older rail fan, he just said it resembled the old (brick) North Melbourne station, the station buildings at NM were black until they were sandblasted around 20 odd years ago. The old Richmond station would have been black too, from all the steam era soot. I reckoned the current buildings resembled the style of Moorabbin and Elsternwick stations. There are other stations but I can’t remember them all right now.

What a wonderful video and history of the Richmond Station - very cool you got those books! I love the Richmond Station, its a very good example of mid 20th Century architecture, I love the different tiles to each platform too, very 1950s. I really enjoy the station and hope it remains into the future as its a great example and the formality is easy on the eye and functional to navigate

@@thetrainman548 Look forward to your future videos - perhaps a revisit to the station and you can show each platform entry as each one has different tile colours, amazing! Also the main lobby area as you enter has an original clock too on the ceiling by the looks of it. These small details make up the station and its modernist history

6:35, I really, really agree with that, they need to make the station entrance more big and visible, the station by now I think needs another upgrade, and also make the sports events entry and exit open 24/7 and they need to tell people about the mcg entry and exist at Brunson ave. Because I never knew about it till recently!

Another very interesting video. I agree referring with the ‘unattractive’ comments. However I do see an opportunity to beautify the station when the Cranbourne and Pakenham trains are diverted to Metro Tunnel, creating a significant reduction in services and need for platforms. Thankyou TrainMan 👍🏼

Very much so! The reduction in patronage will hopefully see a major upgrade to the station in stages, with 10 platforms not fully needed at one point, we can see one platform at a time being rejuvenated. Glad you enjoyed Paul, and thank you for your insight!

Great video. I've used that station hundreds of times. I agree some parts of it are nice like the different coloured tiles lining each ramp, but I think it really needs an upgrade. The western entrance should be open all the time as well. People want to visit the tennis centre, the MCG, AAMI park and all other other parkland every day, not just on match day. A roof over the whole station would be nice too. It's desperately cold and wet in winter. I didn't know that the earlier rail bridge over Swan st was east of the current one. I had assumed the new bridge was built right where the old one was. As far as I'm aware, there is no evidence of the original bridge at all. Be interesting to see where it was, superimposed over today's buildings. It would have gone straight through the Corner Hotel I imagine.

I remember when I first went to Richmond station when I studied at Holmesglen TAFE, and PTV (this would be in like 2014) told me to catch a train from platform 10, and aside from highschool when metcards were around, I had never caught public transport. So when I went to platform 10 I saw no trains and no one waiting, nervously, I asked someone about it and they said that the train I wanted to catch came from platform 9. So many memories of Richmond station (had to continue to get off there when I went to uni because Frankston line always killed the city loop at like 8am). Edit: Also to add which is a fun fact, the station was in the 1992 film Romper Stomper, but they named it Footscray station instead.

It gets better - she also used to catch the Kew train to Hawthorn, she went on the Spirit of Progress with an S class Pacific (she said it was Edward Henty) and just to top it off, the return trip a week later was pulled by H 220, Heavy Harry! The most I can hope for is a Trainz simulation. 🚂 Actually that would be cool, a Trainz version of old Richmond to wander through.

In 2014 every station platform, as well as the exits to the sporting complexes at the western end of the station underwent a makeover. Roofs were built to cover the entire length of each platform, and the sloping bits down to the western subway got covered up too. These and many parts of the platforms used to be exposed to the elements.

It is amazing how history repeats itself and can come back and haunt you. Richmond was redeveloped as a consequence of operation phoenix, a government appointed investigation to invigorate VR after years of neglect, especially after World War 2. It was advised to redevelop and make Richmond station 10 platforms with large population growth in the eastern and south eastern suburbs, which all turned out to be correct. It was also advised to build an underground connecting loop from Richmond to North Melbourne to help get people around the city. Ring a bell? We are now going through massive disruption and cost for an underground connecting loop from South Yarra to North Melbourne. Politicians with no vision, and not prepared to spend to save in the future.

Thank you for the extra information cudgee. I have read a little on operation phoenix and it's plan for the city, very interesting to see some of it's plans today. It is a shame to see the level of disruption occurring because of the new tunnels, better now than later I guess, and I hope to see more projects going ahead ASAP, because the longer they wait to complete, the harder it will be to construct
