Great podcast and am looking forward to your videos on classic sci fi and hopefully some guides on where to start for those of us who haven’t read anything older than Dune (like me 😅). Keep up the great work!

Just yesterday I thought to myself, it is a pitty that this podcast had seemingly ended for good. Glad to be proven wrong!

I grew up in the 60s before Star Wars. I was a member of the Science Fiction Book Club and read Dune, the Robot Novels, the Foundation series and many others in my teens. I ate up all the black & white horror/sci-fi movies of the 50s into the early 60s. The Day the Earth Stood Still is still a favorite. Then there were the color movies like Forbidden Planet, The War of the Worlds, This Island Earth, When Worlds Collide, etc. However, I still remember sitting on the floor in my parent's living room when the first episode of Star Trek aired. I caught it by accident. It was like a Science Fiction novel had leapt off the page onto the TV screen and I became a fan for life (although the latest offerings I don't consider true Star Trek). I imagine that is what Star Wars was like to the generation that came after mine. I'm still an avid Science Fiction reader, but one thing that disappoints me today is that so much Sword and Sorcery fiction is lumped in with Science Fiction. I wish it was separated out into its own genre, but maybe my view is in the minority. Thanks for the great overview and I'll look forward to your future offerings.

Love it... A good high-level arc of literary movements and sub-genres. I anticipate you will get into lower levels of abstraction in coming episodes. Strata of ideas can be split many different ways. But for me, one interesting way of discussing Science Fiction is at the level where concepts have had a one-to-one transferrence from the realm of science to the realm of fiction and from the realm of fiction to the realm of science. In our day, this level of abstraction is relevant but also concrete and "discussable ". On a side note, I have not heard you talk about Olaf Stapledon, and wonder how you interpret his contribution? (I only discovered this, your other channel, just today. And I have not listened to all your content, so maybe you have.) ❤

The Martian chronicles deserve flowers. While acknowledging it’s rather abrupt racial/social misgivings and problems it’s still a great piece of sf. Super influential.

Hi Quinn - Have you seen Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode "Far Beyond the Stars"? It's about a Black science fiction writer employed by a sci fi pulp magazine in the 1950s and his struggles to publish his story about people in the 24th century on a space station and a Black man is their commander. The episode deals with larger cultural issues of sexism and racism. It's one of the best episodes of Trek. I hope have seen it. Looking forward to the next phase of your podcast.

I've been excitedly waiting for this to come out. 😀 I recently started working on my own sci-fi book, which draws heavy inspiration from the og's like Shelly, and this is exactly the content I've been looking for . I especially appreciate the idea of the Novum. Thanks for the great episode Quinn. I can't wait for your doc video to come out.🖖

Star Trek was my gateway drug to science fiction literature. I love Star Wars, but Star Wars didn't get me reading science fiction. Star Trek showed me "fully automated luxury gay space communism" [it's a meme in Star Trek Shitposting] and hope for the future of humanity. Star Wars gave me a role model in General Princess Leia Organa, but I identified more with Star Trek characters. This isn't a Trek vs Wars post. I love both. Just saying one got me reading books and shaped my worldview.

Quinn you can ignore my suggestion if you want, you know better them me your structure and the best way to deliver your message but if your future super video has like 4 hours or more you could maibe divide it in parts to be more manageable for people to listen to, again is your choice and im gonna listen to it no matter what
