Loved the history of Seiko, Thanks. Back in 1969 when I was 16 years old I bought my very first new watch. It was a Seiko 5. Over time it stopped working but I kept the watch for sentimental reasons. Earlier this year I had complete service and repair done for $275. Even the watch repair guy said I can buy a nice new Seiko for that price. I'm glad I had this watch repaired. I do own Omegas, Rolex and others but this 50 year old Seiko holds a special place in my heart.

Great video Teddy! I'd love a video on Credor, the brand seems very hush-hush I have a Seiko Bell-matic 4006-7010 grey dial on the way. So much watch for so little money. If Seiko offer more robust options for Spring Drive at 38mm I'd be over the moon!

I love these videos, Teddy. From the way you described them, Seiko could very much have been considered the pioneer in wrist-borne tech.
@jakekaywell59723 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Regarding quartz technology, The Swiss were the first to develop a quartz wristwatch movement (the BETA 1) and Longines was the first to make a quartz wristwatch with the Ultra-Quartz. However, Seiko was the first to bring a quartz wristwatch to market, so they get all the credit. The Seiko Astron was also a luxury piece, meaning it wouldn't be until 1972 that Bulova's Accuquartz would be released, which was the first mass-market quartz watch.

Excellent video. I reproduce here my comments on Bark and Jack video on the SBGN005, a very honest and unpretentious video -"I will say something here which for some reasons, you don't hear people talk about on youtube. I bought my first Rolex and Patek 20 years ago. I bought the solid gold Yatchmaster new during the 97 Asian financial crisis with a 30% discount for 6700 usd and a pre-own hand-crafted solid gold Three Centre Hand Manual wind Patek with box and papers for just 2500 usd. I escape 3 previous crisis and i am prepared for the next one, which, Jim Rogers said is going to be bigger than all previous 3 adds up. I still have these watches which includes the Daytona, Batman, Hulk, Air-king, Date-just and the Nautilus. I came in contact with GS much later. Like you, I cannot stop thinking about it when i first saw it. Since then, I have 15 in my collections. I have 2 9F, both giving me +2 sec per year. The SBGV237 has an unique case design and bracelet. The case side profile is the most beautiful of all my watches. The bracelet does taper a bit from 19 to 18. I cannot see the Nautilus being more superior in finishing, and, the GS certainly feel silkier. The hands and indices dances even in dim light which makes my heart skip a bit every time i see them play with the lights. The Patek and rolex do not do this for me. I do see finer details on the Patek's mechanism, but, you can also see the same in higher end GS/Credor. 'I agree with the value proposition. I have BMW, Benz and Lexus. They always lose money. The value is in the satisfaction i get from them. Then again, unlike the cars, I buy all my GS with a 25% regular discount. I see that none of my GS loses money. Some of the LE like the Peacock and SBGH047 Silver Iwateyama have actually increase in prices. I aspect my latest acquisitions, the SBGK005 and SBGY003 to be the same, but, it doesn't really matter. Also, i like thicker and bigger watches as much as i like smaller and thinner watches, bec i know why they are made that way. Anyway, unless you are buying one or two watches, it's pretty boring if all your watches are small and thin. Really, if you have played with watches for a long time, you would have gotten over this stigma, which some 'experts' like to promote incessantly. They are just giving people wrong idea. The thing with Rolex is this. Though machine made, they are very well made. But, these days, they are over-hyped, and over-priced. If you put them beside the GS, you can clearly see the difference between machine made and hand crafted ones. Also, the range of mechanism in the GS is more exciting. Patek, on the other hand, are very well hand-made watches, but, they are also over-hyped and over-priced. The pasture is not as green on the other side as what many people is implying. If you are not familiar with watches, you may be surprised to find that, of the much over-looked 9S64, there's none better in the Patek. It takes an excellent mechanism to carry the long minute hand, and an even longer second hand at high frequency for 72 hours and at the same time keeps 'chronometer time.' Mine gives me +2 spd. Connoisseurs called this type of sec hand the Third Hand and the best of watches. This is the most basic of complications, but, probably, the most important. It's the foundation for good automatic watches. When people says, ' High horology need not be expensive,' this would be an excellent example ( I bought the SBGW231 new for only 3K). Other complications are nice, but, only if you understand this basic. Then, again, the 9S63 is a much better mechanism than the Caltrava small second. '" Here is my comment on Watchbox video comparing the SBGK002 with Omega Tressor : 'The gs not only has a better mechanism than the patek calatrava small sec but way better all round. The dial is an art piece. Wrong comparison. The tressor should be compared to the gs caliber 9s64, the latest being the sbgw231 which cost one third the price of the omega. The hands and indices of the gs dances even in dim lights. The tressor runs at lower beat and yet has lower power reserve.' Then, there is one that compares the Sub with the GS Hi-beat diver. It has a picture of a watch with the left showing the sub's hour hand, and the right side, the GS minute hand. That's a very wrong picture. The Sub's hands are much smaller and shorter, especially, the minute hand. It takes a much better mechanism to carry the bigger and longer hands of the GS to run at higher beat, maintaining a higher power reserve, and at the same time keep excellent time.' The tourbillion is a marvel, but, now you can have one for 500 usd. The Spring-drive is a standing marvel, testament of piaget's 70K failure. My latest, the SBGY003, is arriving next week. This is one up, being a manual wind. What i said is nothing special. It's common knowledge among watch collectors.
