It's December 30th, 2021. Magic Mountain is closed today for rain, so that means I get a free day off of work. I watched this series as it came out just after I hired in. It's been 9 months now that I've worked at the park. So far, it's been a blast. It's weird how things line up, isn't it? It took the world coming to a complete stop and then slowly turning back on for me to step foot in the park that I've lived closest to for my entire life, and it wasn't even as a guest but as an employee. And still, it just so happened that the year I show up is the same as its 50th anniversary... not unlike when I visited my first theme park, Disneyland, for its own 50th anniversary 16 years ago. This year has been such a (for lack of a better term) rollercoaster for me, for the park, and for the world. It's only fitting then, that it would cap off an intense ride of 50 years for the park with the most. We'll see what 2022 has in store for me beginning my second year with the park, the world entering its 3rd year of covid, and Magic Mountain entering the next 50 years as the thrill capitol of the world.

We were passing by the " Future site of Magic Mountain" when we all yelled, pull in!!! We drove down Magic Mountain parkway, then, it was a wide swath of dirt. The tower was up, & seemed quite a distance away. I recall a huge American flag, waving proudly at the top. When it opened they're were Many visits, & wonderful times.......I remember seeing kc & the sunshine band in the amphitheater, & we're all impressed at such a great skilled, diverse band. THEY JAMMED!!!! What a great group.....My brother just sent me this vid. 2 days after, I came across old 8 mm film Rolls, marked Magic Mountain 1975. I can't wait to see them...Valencia has always been one of my Favorite location's. I love d land, & Knott's, but magic mountain has a feel, that I love even more... 👍 I'd rather work they're too!!! Lol 🎶

@Micycles very weird question: I went to six flags recently and ran into this hilarious ride op. He was playing drums with the gold rusher brake run and was one of the funniest ride ops I’ve met. He would shout things that got guests hyped for the ride and made people laugh. I was wondering if it was you. He said he was an enthusiast. The chances are crazy but I’m still wondering

@@Bellathebear777 I enjoyed your comment. I grew up just outside of New York City and have the same kind of amazing memories for Action Park and Six Flags Great Adventure, both parks in New Jersey. I was born in 1967 and I’m just barely old enough to remember another place called Palisades Park on the high cliffs of the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, overlooking Manhattan. They’re all great memories.

Dude I’ve been a Siz Flags Magic Mountain 🎢 fan since I was ten years old, so for my birthday 🎂 which happened to be in October the 31 🎃 👻 💀 🧟‍♂️ 🧟‍♀️ 🧙‍♀️ my parents took me there and my first ride was Ninja 🥷 which happened to be my favorite ride even though my mom & dad preferred Colossus cause that was her favorite since they were teens and thus that’s when they first met and fell in love ♥️ ( RIP 🪦 dad who died of Covid 🦠 last year, he fought as hard as he could but couldn’t make it 😢), but of course when Goliath came during my high school 🏫 year I went on the summer of 2001 and it became my best favorite ride cause it was not only high but the velocity as well. Since I was ten I kept going every year to the park not just on my birthday 🎂 for the freight fest 🧟‍♀️🧟 🤡 but every spring break and summer ☀️ too. Oh yeah Six Flags Magic Mountain 🎢 was my favorite amusement park along with Disneyland but when it comes to freight fest 🧟🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️🤡 Six Flags rigs number one ☝️.

I remember when I was 10, in 1993, I waited with my sister and her boyfriend in line for Viper. I was so, so scared. 7 loops! I boarded the coaster, started freaking out, and they let me get off before we took off. I caused such a scene! I went the next year and was so proud of myself, and it cured me of fear of rollercoasters for the rest of my life. It was such a blast. To this day Batman and Ninja are my favourite rides at that park. My family always went to Red Robin after Magic Mountain. In Junior high, my friends and I all had season passes and our parents would argue over who would drive us this time. So many memories. My dad loved Knotts since his childhood, and I remember watching everyone go on corkscrew when I was too short. Southern California was such a great place to grow up in the 80's and 90's!

Very well done, a lot of research was done for this video. My home park is Six Flags Great America, I first went there in the 70's. As a former employee from 1990-92, I noticed that theme parks, began catering to young people, and leaving family friendly rides and attractions behind. Back in the day if you had 3 or 4 rollercoasters, that was considered a lot. Since 2000 it seems that they have to have the biggest, and most of any park. Since then you have coaster enthusiasts, who travel to all parks to ride the newest coaster.

I graduated from Westminster High School in June 1971. Our Class of '71 opted to have its all night party at Magic Mountain instead of Disneyland. We were the first high school to go there. Some of the rides weren't even operating yet. We were given coupons to return at a later date. The entertainment included Kenny Rogers (before he was a country star), John Davidson and a band called Redeye. I took my girlfriend (future wife) and we had a great time. We're still happily married and have 4 grandchildren. We took our two boys as they were growing up back in the 90's. Our main focus was all the great roller coasters at that park. Then the park become a little run down and security was weak. People were jumping lines, there were globs of chewing gum stuck on the trees. That was the last time we visited Magic Mountain. But, we still have very fond memories of going there in June 1971.

Having grown up a couple hours away from Magic Mountain, this was my home park for years from about 2013 until I couldn't afford passes anymore in 2018. So getting to go back in history to a much happier time in my life for a little bit was much appreciated. I distinctly remember my dad and uncle being absolutely distraught when Colossus closed down, because it was one of their favorite rides growing up. I wish I'd had the guts to go on Colossus before it changed over, but I was terrified of roller coasters to start, and that was part of the reason my family got me the passes to start, was to try and get me to enjoy the rides. It definitely worked. Lol

Growing up between Michigans Adventure and Cedar Point, I never really heard of the problems that Magic Mountain was having. A child of the late 80s, it was always Cedar Point vs Magic Mountain and all we heard was whenever SFMM got a new ride and we could speculate that CO would then get one. These documentaries are nice to see how much the park has grown through the years without me actually having to visit it.

I remember when Magic Mountain was going to come to Golden Colorado. Part of the park was already constructed including a mound of dirt that was going to be part of the train. It never came to fruition and a park called Heritage Square was built instead. That was my entire childhood. My parents bought a 50's diner there and I'd be there every day of my life. Unfortunately they tore down the park in 2015. But I have so many great memories from our restaurant "Notz Landing" including being an extra for the show Unwrapped (on the food channel) because marc summers used to shoot his scenes at our restaurant. I was just 8 years old when i went to Magic Mountain for the 1st time and was the same year that Goliath was brand new. I was just shy of 48 inches but my 5 foot tall mother told me “loosen your shoes and get on your tippy toes if they decide to measure you” I did what i was told and was able to get on! I was so scared, but after riding, felt the most amazing rush, and from that moment on I was hooked and never was scared of any coaster after. Goliath was monumental and throughout the years have literally just stopped on my way to Los Angeles to get on it. I had a membership grandfathered in when they filed bankruptcy. And was able to stay on for free admission and free parking for less than $5 a month. I held on to that for almost 5 years. You dis such a great job with the Video. Big Ups! I really need to go back. Have yet to do the Pendelum, the racer, and the new wonder woman. Might be time to make the trip!

Fun Fact: My dad went to Magic Mountain went it first opened in 1971. He said he hated it because there were hardly any rides. He ended up leaving after only 1 hour and him and his friend went to Disneyland instead.

My 1st visit was in 1973 (I was 6 yrs old) Remember arriving late evening & eating corn on the cob. Rode a few rides. Del Holland was "my" GM @ defunct AstroWorld. I worked winter work crew when I met him for the 1st time. He shook my 19 yr. old hand while I had muddy boots on & sweaty from cleaning the park & said "Hi! I'm Del the new General manager. Now that's how classy of a guy he was. I'd see him @ IAAPA many times as well. He did a LOT for Six Flags. Great vid on one of the 3 big parks that opened the same yr. WDW & Six Flags Mid-America. They've all been through some times!

This makes my heart happy. I was born in 1972 and lived in Newhall/Saugus/Valencia/Canyon Country (as it was known before "Santa Clarita") until 1986. Needless to say I basically lived at Magic Mountain since it was the only thing to do in town at that time. I miss those damn trolls and I have pictures of my 4th birthday in the park! Saw my first concert there (Flock of Seagulls) and was part of media day when they opened the Sarajevo Bobsleds. Thanks for a great stroll down my memory lane!

Loved this documentary! By the time it was over I didn't realize 2 hours had already passed because it was that good and I was so invested, especially being a roller coaster enthusiast and a SoCal resident. It was awesome, not only to learn about Magic Mountain's history, but to go down memory lane and relive some of the moments you mentioned. I was actually there during my spring break in 1993 when TLC was supposed to perform and all I remember was all the chaos that happened and being terrified since I was only 15 at the time. After all the bad press, changes in ownership and management, and even a bankruptcy, I'm so glad that Magic Mountain not only survived, but continues to evolve and remain one of the top amusement parks with the best roller coasters in the world. Thank you for making this awesome documentary!

Great job on this! I love knowing the history of a place before I go. I've never been to Magic Mountain, though it's been on my radar since I was a kid. I never got to the West Coast until I was an adult and had sort of stopped riding coasters. Now that I'm back into it, I cannot wait to go to Magic Mountain and Knott's. I need to get there before I'm too old and crotchety to ride all these great thrill rides.

Great video. Having grown up in Valencia Glen , our family moved there in 1969. (mom still lives in my childhood home ) . Myself and our next-door neighbor, She was 5 and I was 7 won a contest through the Signal newspaper I believe, to actually open the park. We cut the ribbon with Bugs bunny . The picture still hangs on the wall at moms house. Worked there also while a teenager. Spent plenty of nights working the arcade. Great place to grow up in Valencia. Great memories. Thanks.

I must commend you for your historical documentation about Magic Mountain! Eugene "Doc" Lemmon was my uncle. When I was 12 years old, in the fall of 1969, I was with my mom, and uncle "Doc" on the future site of Magic mountain before the earth movers were there. I remember seeing people picking green onions on the hills there. "Doc" said, "we're going to build an amusement park right here, and it's going to be called Magic Mountain". From 4:46-5:51 you mention his background with Disneyland. "Doc" was Park Operations Manager at Disneyland from 1956-61, supervising over 1,OOO people, and reporting directly to Walt. in fact, "Doc Lemmon, who would become the fifth official employee of Disneyland...". Documented in Todd James Pierce's 2016 book., titled, "Three Years in Wonderland". From 8:43-8-48 you show a replica of the Magic Mountain map that was in "Doc's" office, while he was the President of Magic Mountain, As I type this, I have his poster hanging on my wall in my office. That original Magic Mountain logo was designed by my cousin, Lon, who is "Doc's" oldest son. I also have "Doc's" Magic Mountain hard-hat that he wore, during Magic Mountain's construction. I also attended Magic Mountain on opening day, so I have many fond memories! You also mentioned "Doc's" involvement at Disneyland. He was the Park Operations Manager at Disneyland from 1961-65, supervising more than 1,000 employees, and reporting directly to Walt. According to Todd James Pierce's 2016 book, "Three years in Wonderland", on page 104, "Doc" is credited with being , "the fifth official employee of Disneyland". "Doc's" last name is actually pronounced phonetically, 'La-mahn", as opposed to "Lemon". In your wonderful comprehensive documentary, you mention Cedar Point Park several times. "Doc" finished his career at Disneyland in Jan. of 1961, and went on to renovate Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. See the Sunday morning edition of the "Cleveland Plain Dealer Newspaper", front page, Jan. 22, 1961, for documentation. Thanks again for this!

@@AirtimeThrills Yes, you are welcome, he also headed up the Cal-Expo in Sacramento, California as that began getting underway in 1966. After "Doc" finished his stint at Cedar Point, Walt Disney personally recommended "Doc" as the man to head up the Cal-Expo. I have a copy of a photo from 1967 of "Doc" with Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Reagan became Governor in Jan. of 1967. "Doc" left the Cal Expo project in 1968. In 1969 he became one of the VP's at Seaworld Inc. I have an annual report form Seaworld Inc. from 1969 that documents this, with them highlighting their new upcoming joint-venture Magic Mountain theme park, in print and picture.

At 41:25 Z-Force is the reason I watched your video. That was my favorite ride. Your documentary was very informative and interesting. Thank you for your presentation! It's been awhile since I've been to the park. I believe my last roller coaster ride was on Goliath. These Coasters are real extreme to me at my age. So I will go just to watch other people ride. I did see they closed the other ride I used to watch people on called "Spin Out."
