www.getBJJsponsorship.com - Upgrade your passion from a pastime to a profession. || Ricardo de la Riva gave jiu-jitsu one of it’s most popular positions. The de la Riva guard is an effective if somewhat advanced form of open guard that offers a wide variety of sweeps and submissions.
While many positions and techniques in jiu-jitsu can be found in other grappling arts, the de la Riva guard was an original creation of jiu-jitsu.
In this video De la Riva describes the origins of the guard that now bears his name, and he shows us how to make the position even more effective by avoiding common mistakes.

He is so mature, balanced and professional person. Despite being the opposite of a muscular/athletic fighter, he deserves to stay in BJJ history thanks to his technique and dedication. I doubt any other physical sport would had given Mr. De la Riva this privilege.

I'm a fairly big 16 year old and I always had that mindset that this technique was always the "little man's technique", it wasn't until month or so ago that I really started using it and developing my own style and now I can drop other blue belts or even the higher belts like purple or brown. :)

Like gordo, he developped it and made it known, but de la riva and half guard were already used in japan by kosens judo guys. U can fight footage before that de la riva started, in black and white where japanese guys were doing 20min rounds starting on the ground and playing half or de la riva, but with less options.

dobermann64 That's stupid. I'm sure you can find black and white footage of a Japanese guy in a kimono throwing a crappy left jab; this doesn't mean that the Japanese invented and perfected Western Boxing.
@profd65

John Kim No, idiot. The Gracies claim that Carlos Gracie was taught jiu-jitsu by Maeda, and that Carlos's brother Helio modified jiu-jitsu so that it would work for a small, weak person.

profd65 So why dont they use the correct names for the moves instead of changing it. The Japanese guy in a kimono throwing a crappy left jab still calls it a jab he doesnt make up a name and claim it theirs.

niju garami is at least 100 years old! Mr. De la Riva did Not invent this guard, this was a very popular technique in old fashioned judo before it became an Olympic sport. Respectfully to Mr.De la Riva he may have "discovered" it on his own independently because his sensei did not know the technique but Maeda would have shown this to his students well before De la Riva was born. This is still very common in kozen judo of course.

Ashi garami técnica base, quizá desarrolló buenas técnicas a partir de ella pero no la inventó, con todo respeto al sensei.
@walksilva7905
@walksilva7905 Жыл бұрын
Ashi garami parte da ideia do gancho em cima do joelho pra criar desequilíbrio e derrubar, A de la riva o ganho é por baixo e tem o posicionamento do corpo diferente, fazendo n só o desequilíbrio como também a finalização.

Felipe Costa Carlson was De La Riva's instructor and has been quoted as saying that he taught him this technique many times. So unless he's a huge liar, which he has never been known to be, it's a fact.

He helped him to develop the technique further however originally it was his own technique. Gracie was just someone to clean up the technique if you must, he helped it become what it is today. :)

My comment keeps being taken down for obscure reasons... DLR should be given credit but, unlike what it said at 0:20 , it is not" *an original creation which has never been seen before in other grappling arts* ": kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJnZg5-Pf5xln5o No hate. Just highlighting history.

It is simple, it is not true and is not the same movement. all the De la Riva guards in bjj competitiosns came directly from his classes. Stop with that non sense bulllshit

@@ramonr.dossantos5136 No need to be rude Sir. I can show you judo books from the early 80's with a sweep from the DLR position. I am not saying that he "copied" it, he might have rediscovered it by himself. But there is simply rarely anything truly new in grappling.

it's just how the r is pronounced in Portuguese. Why stop with the la Riva should we try and pronounce everything like they do in Portuguese? The only Brazilian that trains with us here says de la Riva. Also when I trained in Spain the brazilians there made an effort to say Riva, because they were speaking Spanish not Portuguese.
