The Gulf Rupee was a short-lived currency created in 1959 and dissolved only a few years later. Its creation was due in part to gold smuggling into the Arabian gulf which caused cash shortages for the Indian government. The banknotes were very similar in design to the Indian Rupee however they had small details to differentiate between the Indian Rupee. The Gulf Rupee was eventually phased out beginning in 1966 as Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar and Oman all started issuing their own national currency. Kuwait was the first to create their own currency; it was called the Kuwaiti Dinar. The last country to make its own currency was Oman and they eventually created the Omani Rial.
