I used to take the RTD bus line 5 with mother to the mall and when i got older i went with my friends to the mall it was good times to be a teenager and just hanging out buying clothes and shoes for school and it was a good time for me.

Hey Eric...thanks for this upload. Hung out there a couple of times (I was more of a 1st Gen Del Amo Mall Rat). I actually got married in a chapel behind the Hawthorne Plaza. It'll 27 years this June 28.

Awesome. Good to see you got to this one. I requested it. I would frequent here in the late 80s. I believe the movie theaters were on the first floor. We would mostly go here because of the movie theaters. I drove through there today on 120th and got to see the side if the mall. Can't believe the building is still there.

The reason it's called the plaza is because of the plazas that were along Birch St. Back in the day. The original area the mall was built was potentially an attractive place and had it been modernized, it could have been today. The new trend would be an open-air promenade. 2 examples in my area would be the Sparks, NV Outlet and the way they've redone Carson City.

I worked at leads cards & gifts. I went out with a security guard who worked their. Some of my friends worked at Hot Dog on a stick. Crime sure did get bad.

Agreed!! They better make something cuz it's a waste if it stays there for more years! Also there's this other place near it called hometown buffet I passed there and guess what! It's abandoned...

@@Nini-vj8swYeah I remember Home Town Buffet. A great place and a childhood memory. Enjoyed going there. Closed down I guess cause of food safety.

This mall was opened around the same timeframe as Glendale Galleria, except the Glendale Galleria is still going strong today. I take it this building is still standing although gutted. Hopefully it will soon be demolished so as not to attract derelicts and kids. I also believe that a scene in the movie “Gone Girl” was also filmed in this mall in its gutted condition.

I did get the right answer. Seems like the town just gave up multiple times! Sounds almost like Vallco Fashion Plaza in Cupertino!

Hawthorne is considered a suburb? Sounds like it has gang problems. but housing is decent price and location seem good.

The locals called it the Hawtha-Watts mall. They bussed the blacks from Inglewood as employees the crime rate went up and the mall turned into a mess. Most of the long time residents moved out of Hawthorne. As a kid this was a safe area. As soon as the mall came into play Hawthorne was no longer safe. Sad

Still blows my mind that this sits abandoned after all these years.. Personally a mixed use complex that retains the mall would be ideal to me... Needs a grocery anchor, entertainment anchor, offices and housing to get it going.. This is basically what every mall in Canada is becoming or planning on soon enough... And ironically the original vision and intent of the mall's creator, Victor Gruen. He proposed malls to be the climate controlled heart of new urban centres worldwide...

I never go down there but I always get Hawthorne and Inglewood. Both are toilets.
