love the way they quickly zip past the German helicopters. They were in use in WW2 and could lift other aircraft, and were used to transport troops and do medevacs. One, just after the war, made a >100 Km flight over the English Chanel to RAF Beaulieu. The USA took several back to the USA after WW2 and took them apart to see how they work.

@Matan Cohen , I agree 100%. You sometimes have to try 20 times before succeeding so not only failure is something on the way to success, but failure even 20 times can happen on the way to success. Anyone who says that failure automatically means that you won't succeed is leaning towards the ignorant thinking, or is someone who is a quitter

@@Maniruzzaman1978 yeah, lol. Really, I have previously learned that the first helicopter-like flying machines were designed and developed by Igor Sikorsky in the 1930s, he was trying to invent a new type of aircraft which could lift straight up vertically, and designed and tested several different early helicopters, and learned how vertical maneuvering could be made possible by large rotating overhead blades. The term helicopter was coined in 1861 from French term "helicóptere", meaning spinning helix whirl, from new 1800s factory machinery being invented at the time which had spinning helicopter-like blades on them. After Igor tested various early helicopters in the 1930s, his first designed more familair helicopters began more mass production and use in the 1940s. Igor was Russain born and designed and developed flying machines and the first helicopters in Paris and in Connecticut. The helicopter was not invented by a Midwestern guy with a mustache and sunglasses named Helicopter Bill, like I thought when I was 13, haha, lol

Nobody died I invented the helecopter in around 1956 with the founding of bell helecopter co. constructors I was 2 years old at the time and invented it so precisley the first time that it simpley took off flying perfectly. I did it at Cook Rd Fairgrounds in Grosse pointe Woods mi. and it became an instant hit as a carnival attraction giving rides for $5.00 I think. The helocopter was my third ride at my invention of the carnival the second one was the Ferris wheel ( they were family friends) and first was the pony rides and that was my invention of horseback riding.

Thanks for your reply, Bob. I have a copy and have read The God Machine. It is a great history of the development of the helicopter. I have since bought several other (mostly older) books on the topic, and about five other videos and DVDs. None of the videos include all the footage I remember seeing in the documentary I'm seeking. After almost twenty years of searching, I'm beginning to believe that I don't have enough information, or it was never released for sale by the cable channel that broadcast it, or the company that produced it. I will try to query the group you mentioned.

All the early success in helicopters was in Germany. Their military copters were well ahead. Operation Ivory Soap, pacific shipbourn airplane repair, employed Sicorski copters to carry parts to damaged planes ashore.

First practical Rotorcraft that really flew and went places, not just tied to the ground? It was in Spain- Engineer Mr Juan De La Cierva, year 1920. We still use the tilt rotors systems he created in 1920, in 2018 helicopters. Enough said. Tilt rotors make the blades adjust to the airspeed making the "Rotorcraft" as called before, able to move forward and not stay static and useless. The other rotor systems were discarded and De La Cierva 1920's rotor system was and its is still been used in all kinds of Rotorcraft or helicopters all over the world. Igor Sikorsky only added more hover control to the Cierva System after De La Cierva got killed in suspicious ways in an airplane crash as a passenger. The modern helicopter is a 90% Spanish invention, like the quitar and anticonception pills are also.

I'm looking for a much longer helicopter development history documentary video that I saw on cable TV back in the mid 1990s. I have purchased several from the History Channel on DVD and even a couple others on VHS, but none seem to be the one I remember. I have queried The Learning Channel and The Discovery Channel without success. though I believe one of them broadcast it at least twice. It was chronological and began contemporary footageof this kind. More uniquely, it emphasized the civilian history, developers, and companies they founded, such as Bell, Sikorsky, Kamen, Hiller, and Piasecki more than the military, though it did seem to have developments through the WW 2and Korean War years. It was no less than an hour long, and probably at least 90 minutes. It had both Nyack and while and color footage, and a distinctive, sometimes just narration. Any ideas, titles, or source/search hints would be greatly appreciated. I have posted queries on Imdb.com boards years back, with no replies.

Nice video. Now dated because of the new electric motor fliers and drones that are everywhere. Too bad that so few people now own small farms. These new electric copters are very versatile and would make management of 50 to 250 acre farms and ranches very manageable in all weather.

Glad that they commented how Juan de la Cierva developed the hinges for the blades, opening the path for the helicopter. Too bad he died in a commercial airplane accident.

As with every invention video featured on YT whether historic or not the emphasis on america's influence, innovation and cleverness invariably comes to the fore. With this one there is very little mention made of the pioneering work made by British inventors but, as always picture after picture of american machines predominates.
