"Greatest of all the mansions of the Dwarves was Khazad-dûm, the Dwarrowdelf, Hadhodrond in the Elvish tongue, that was afterwards in the days of its darkness called Moria."
In this episode we explore the complete history of the Mines of Moria, its growth, trade and the battles fought there.. We also follow the Fellowships's journey through Moria including Gandalf's fight with the Balrog. Finally we discuss the layout of Moria and the subdivisions in this Dwarven City!

For those wondering, the 3D clips are from the game called Lord of the Rings Online. I recommend it to all LotR fans, mainly because it stays true to the lore and enables you to travel and experience the lands of Middle earth.

Albin Johansson You are not playing an Istari wizard but a loremaster, seeker of knowledge. It is safe to assume that Middle earth had, in fact, been home to such individuals. I stand behind what I said, LotRO is, to those who want an MMO that follows Tolkien's work, damn near perfection, as it follows what was written and expands on it remarkably. Of all the aspects of this game, staying true to the lore is the best for me by far.

I could never live in any of these Dwarven realms under the mountains, but it would be tremendous to get to visit them. Especially Moria. The immensity of it, the very weight of the mountains, lie on the chapters taking place in it. The journey through it is dream like, moving, scary... I can't put my finger on what exactly it stirs in the subconsciousness.

It's not even completely unrealistic. The early Celts is the Alps had salt mines of gigantic proportions. Great halls like those in Hallstadt. Probably miners and their families would spend most of their time underground working, cooking, eating playing etc.

I always wondered why the Necromancer never reached out to the Balrog in Moria. I mean the orcs he sent there would surely find it, and even if they didn't know what it was, they would tell of it to Sauron, who might just know who or what it was. Just curious why, as he surely knew the balrogs, being Melkor'r right hand man

Hey guys hope you enjoy this video! I'd like some feedback on two things, firstly whether you enjoyed the video clips in this video or if there are too many of them, and secondly whether I'm speaking too fast in it. In some of my older videos, I tend to speak very slow to increase the clarity of the video, yet I feel it's detrimental to the final experience. And so I'm speaking at a more natural pace for me, and I'm happier with the way the videos are turning out, and so I'd like to hear your feedback on this!

Love the series and all the hard work and details, great work ! Minor note, the “well incident” happened in the room where Durin’s tomb lay. This is why the Fellowship was trapped there. It did not happen at the three doors. The first discovery of Gollum following the fellowship happened at the three doors and that is where Gandalf foresaw the ultimate role Gollum would play in the destruction of the ring and made sure that Frodo showed mercy to him.

The Ring slowed down Bilbo's aging. After it was destroyed he aged 'quickly'. Gollum new that he would age again when the Ring was destroyed, as it was, and he was afraid, "Lost, lost! We're lost. And when the Precious goes we'll die, yes, die into the dust." Gollum knew that he was going to hell I think, if such a place existed in Middle-Earth...sad. Anyway I digress. If Gollum has not attacked Sam from behind and the Ring was destroyed without him falling into Mount Doom how much longer would he have lived? Would it be possible for his death to be peaceful. Maybe Sam would take pitty and forgive him in his last moments.
@GeekZoneMT

I always imagined that he would die a few minutes later, though those few minutes would be blissful. He would be finally freed from the chains the ring had placed upon him, I'd imagine it would be exhilarating!

I don't have as positive an outlook, I'm afraid. I think Gollum was a corrupted creature and destruction of the ring wouldn't undo the nature of what he had become. I believe he would have mourned the ring to the depths of his possible grief. I worry that his remaining life would have been filled with wailing and the gnashing of teeth.

Drone Wars How exactly? Gimli, as stubborn he is, most likely thought that the dwarves won and that's why he wanted to go through Moria.
@SFxTAGG3
@SFxTAGG3 6 жыл бұрын
Well, firstly, most everyone besides Gimli thought that something had happened to Balin and his Dwarves. They didn't know it for a fact, and couldn't have, unless they had traveled to Moria themselves. But why would they do that when they have more pressing concerns of their own? There's no internet(obviously) in Middle Earth, and there's no postal service. The only quick and viable means for communication would be emissaries on horseback, or messenger birds(they could use those magical seeing stones, but that's incredibly risky, as Gandalf himself warned against their use). However, Middle Earth is much bigger than the movies would make it seem. Frodo's journey from the Shire to Mordor and back took at least a year or so. Balin and company were trapped, anyway. It's not like they could have sent word. Even if they did send word, it would have taken a **long** time for everyone who needed to know to learn about it. Besides, basically everyone else- including the rest of the Dwarves- had their own shit to take care of. Gondor was under siege from Mordor for years, Rohan had a sick king and was basically in shambles, and all the Elven realms were busy protecting their borders or just flat out leaving Middle Earth. Perhaps Gimli should have figured. And I would say he probably knew in the back of his mind that something bad had happened, but, he just didn't want to face it.

The dwarves get a somewhat muted presence in the Lord of the Rings, no doubt because of their focus in Hobbit, but Khazad-dum is one of my favorite places in the legendarium. Dwarves lived longer than Men, but they weren't immortal, like Elves, and so doubtless it took generations to carve out, and form the mansions of the Dwarves. Elf construction is beautiful, whether building in Rivendel, or straight up shaping in Lothlorien, but each of these had the advantage of already being open places. While Durin and Co. likely did find cavities within the mountain and expanded those they liked, it's just mind-boggling to imagine literally hollowing out the rock, and then in a way where they planned to stay, and live, instead of just extract valuables, then move on, and leave old mines to crumble. That they could make such caverns, and then basically go Hobbit, and craft them into wonderful homes,, is awesome. So, why did Balin risk Durin's Bane? The Dwarf leaders knew why they stopped short, after working so hard to avenge their fallen king, and Balin had to know that it was, again, still there. All the Dwarves present couldn't have stormed the gate, and slain the Balrog, apparently; Gandalf could, and the Dwarves did possibly kill several dragons that sacked their homes, but whatever. He knew he didn't have enough men, if the army had been insufficient, so why risk it? Since he DID make it, and Durin's Bane did wait sometime to do anything, why did no other future Dwarves come to add to it? I kind of get why the other Dwarves didn't know about the fall of Balin; Gimli expected to find his people alive and well there, since they had never reported real problems, but why did no other glory-seeking, or capable Dwarves journey to join Balin, to then discover the truth earlier? He went without the full blessing of Dain, but I'd think some other Dwarves, itching to relive their glory days, would have trailed behind, and discovered the truth, before literally years of no word led to the surprising discovery of the dead, skeletal Dwarves; they had lain dead for some time.

One thing I always wondered about. The Company of the Ring, nine members, was barely in Moria a few days and they were assailed by orcs and the Balrog. Yet Balin entered with a much larger group and managed to establish a colony that lasted a few years. They even started mining mithril, obviously not a quiet, stealthy endeavor. I can kind of understand them fighting off any orcs, but what about the Balrog? Was it on vacation? Hibernating? Hanging out with the Watcher at the West Gate? Being bribed with marshmallows to toast on its fiery mane?

Hi there. This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I'm loving it. It's so informative for people who know little or a lot of the lore of Middle Earth. The video clips you use enhance it as far as I'm concerned and you've clearly thought about when and where to use the clips and it's been edited really well with your narrative. As for your speech, the speed you are speaking is perfect - easy to follow, easy to understand and your accent is a joy to listen to. I did spot an error though: Celebdil should be pronounced with a hard 'C' like Celeborn or Celebrimbor, so it should sound like 'Kelebdil'. It states in Appendix E of The Return of the King that C 'always has the value of "k" even before "e" and "i", therefore 'celeb (silver) should be pronounced "keleb"'. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Great Review and summary! I always learn something new from your videos! Thanks for always giving your audience Tolkien's written account instead of the film versions.It allows the viewer to compare the two and decide which they prefer! It also beautifully recreates the rich fictional tapestry that Tolkien envisioned!

I really wish there were an RPG where you can play as a peaceful dwarf smith/miner/tinkerer/soldier and invest many hours into gameplay that reflects actual apprenticeship - where you start from lowly apprentice and after lots of hard hours of gameplay end up as a master of your craft...even starting family and so on; just to have it all suddenly violently torn away because of some world-ending crisis...

Point of accuracy: the Fellowship fight a cave troll in the film, but not in the book. There is a reference to 'something' powerful hanging back, which they think might be a cave troll, but which is actually the Balrog.

Always thought it was funny that the dwarves had derogatory Elvish slang on their gate. "The doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak friend and enter." It's an Elvish insult and they carve it on their gates... technically speaking, it was Celebrimbor who wrote those words. Was he having a joke at the dwarves expense, since most of them probably couldn't read Elvish?
@GeekZoneMT
@GeekZoneMT 6 жыл бұрын
I always felt that Khazad-Dum was written on the door, though when Gandalf read it he simply used 'Moria' instead of it. Though since we're not told so, we must assume the worst :P
@enoughothis
@enoughothis 6 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it to be in the character of Gandalf to transpose one word for another intentionally.
@GeekZoneMT
@GeekZoneMT 6 жыл бұрын
It would be out of character, though Khazad-Dum was named Moria after it's fall so it does seem odd if it was written on the West-Gate (apart from the fact that you mentioned of it being insulting to the Dwarves). Realistically it could very well be something that Tolkien simply overlooked
@enoughothis
@enoughothis 6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps. The West-gate was made for the use of the Elves of Hollin so perhaps there wasn't much oversight in it's construction? West-gate is a fairly long way from the City of the Dwarrowdelf after all.

Your narrative pacing and the number of clips enhance the videos in my opinion. How about a video with this scenario: What if Glaurung had not been killed by Turin? Suppose the boulder that crushed Hunthor had killed Turin instead?

@narishma
@narishma 5 жыл бұрын
Gimli didn't know what befell Balin's expedition aside from the early settlement. However, the movie made it look like he expected a "Royal welcome", whereas in the books 'There is even a chance that Dwarves are there, and that in some deep hall of his fathers, Balin son of Fundin may be found. However it may prove, one must tread the path that need chooses!' 'I will tread the path with you, Gandalf!' said Gimli. 'I will go and look on the halls of Durin, whatever may wait there - if you can find the doors that are shut.' That makes it look like he hoped for the best, but expected the worst.

I've always wanted to know what the signal was that Pippin started by dropping a stone down the well (Gimili thinks it's a hammer), who the beater of the drums was (orcs on war drums? But then Gimli asks Gandalf "did you meet the beater of the drum?"), and how were the lower levels on fire when Moria is all stone? (Is this 'ghash' from the Balrog?)

Excellent video and analysis. I'm so fascinated with the myths and the history of LOTR. Incredible job u did there. Although there is one mistake u made, the well you mentioned that had alert the orcs of the presence of the fellowship was in Balin's tomb in the movies instead of being in the old guardsroom. Is the movie wrong or did I guees it wrong?
