You're challenging commonly accepted beliefs and not just adding to the tiki canon but advancing it. Just outstanding. Well done.

Great episode. I love this drink. Back in 1968 I visited Douglas Huntington Beach and saw one of the Saturn S-IVB stages being preflight tested. Perhaps it was the one that later sent Apollo 11 to the moon. Who knows? In any event, the Kona Kai was a Douglas hangout and the name of this drink based on that makes too much sense. Cheers.

Incredible video! 1 super small note, you said at 15:34 that it appears in Beachbum Berry's Intoxica! but it actually appears in Beachbum Berry's Taboo Table. Definitely not a big deal, I just don't want anybody buying the wrong book for the recipe.

If your production techniques get much better, you're going to need a mini series on Netflix. The Saturn was probably the first "tiki" drink I ever had with gin, and made me appreciate gin more. I don't know if you've ever made the Cobra's Fang on the channel, but maybe you could do a video or a series on the Cobra's Fang, the Sidewinder's Fang (from Smuggler's Cove), and the Golden Fang (from the Death & Co. book, "Welcome Home), which is a gin variation.

Your storytelling, cinematography, and editing is amazing. Are you using passion fruit syrup for passion fruit nectar?
@makeanddrink6 ай бұрын
I'm using passion fruit syrup. I think it works just fine and don't think it comes across too sweet. There's at least 1 recipe from 1967 that calls for sweet & sour mix instead of lemon. And another that calls for 1 1/2 passion fruit syurp. The recipe in the video is the same as Beachbum, the glassware, and pretty much all modern takes and it's balanced to me.
@lokmtb85036 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip, I always associated fruit nectar with the thick punch type stuff from Goya. It's usually fruit juice, water, corn syrup, some type of acid to balance it.
@makeanddrink6 ай бұрын
@lokmtb8503 he was probably using a commercial product like Mynors at that time.
@SandstormGT6 ай бұрын
@@makeanddrinkI just made your exact recipe and used Real passion fruit and felt it was a little too sweet. I might try dropping that down to a 1/4oz next time. I also used Hendricks because I didn't have any London Dry available but I don't think that would account for the sweetness. Great cocktail none the less!
@makeanddrink6 ай бұрын
@SandstormGT Reál is also the sweetest of the commercial brands. I think it’s right around 60-66 Brix. Not huge difference but is sweeter.

Some cocktails don't have much info out there and I'm limited to what's available online or in books. Just works out that some drinks have more info available than others that is not as well known or just misrepresented. I think Corn 'n' Oil is just one of those that's harder to pin down exactly.
