Another great advantage of the M / S technology is: It is the only coincident microphone layout that enables the use of a pure "pressure receiver". This improves the bass transmission, e.g. when recording large organs.

One of the most important characteristics of MidSIde recording is that you have a very solid center pickup (since you have one mic pointing fwd) and still a very good stereo image. That's why it's been used so much for documentary film (used on a boompole, on the go) You have to use it very carefully, because the fig8 mic it's held on it's sides, where it is most sensitive, so it will transmit handling noise easier that any other microphone. But still worths using it.

The most involving orchestral recordings I've ever heard were done with the Decca Tree.

For me, the way with using an eight as difference signal and a cardioid or omnidirectional for the center or mono signal, is exciting, especially no issues with mono compatibility.

You can use any pattern microphone for the "M" in the MidSide array. I have used everything from omni's to shotguns for that.

You cannot use two omnidirectional microphones for a Blumlein pair. Ribbon microphones were commonly available then and usually have a Figure 8 pattern. If you use two omni microphones, they must be spaced or used with a baffle as the Jecklin disc.
