If this video gives you existential dread, allow me to make it worse. 1: The Boltzmann brain hypothesis: In quantum physics, complex objects can sometimes pop into existence. It's rare, but possible. What would happen of a fully formed human brain complete with fake memories of a universe that never existed were to appear? How unlikely would that be?... It turns out that it's statistically FAR more likely for that brain to appear than it is for our entire universe to appear as it has. In other words, at any moment you could realize you're nothing more than a doomed brain floating in space and that all your memories are fake, and the only way to tell is by living another moment. But that just kicks the can down the road, because that moment is now a memory, which could be fake. The good news is that, if this does happen to you, if you ARE a fake brain, you won't have to live with that realization for very long. Brains don't do well in empty space. 2: Gamma-ray bursts / X-ray jets: When black holes absorb large amounts of matter, too much for them to process at once, sometimes it gets whipped into a jet of energy and blasted back out. This results in colossal plumes of energy that dwarf entire galaxies. If a planet were caught in one of these blasts, even millions of light-years away, that side of the planet would be roasted sterile in seconds, and the other half of the planet wouldn't fare much better, with seas boiling and atmosphere burning away. The good news is that, once again, you wouldn't have to deal with it for very long. If you're on the toasted side, you're gone in an instant, reduced to a charred shadow. On the other side, you MIGHT get enough time to realize what's happening, but that's about it. 3: False vacuum decay: What if our universe is in an unstable state, and a more stable state with slightly different physical laws is just a slight nudge away? Well, if any single point in the universe drops to that lower energy state, it'd set off a chain reaction of space around it dropping too, expanding a bubble of this decayed space in all directions at the speed of light. Any matter that this bubble passes over would suddenly be forced to abide the new slightly different laws of physics, and we have no way to know how the rules would change. One things certain through, any change that modifies chemistry in any way would exterminate all life caught in the bubble. The good news, more drastically than the other two, is that you won't even realize this one's happening. Since this spreads at light-speed there will be literally zero warning before it happens, and it will be there and gone in zero time as well. Thanos has nothing on FVD. 4: Space junk / irresponsible gunfire: You don't need the universe to conspire to some grand event to be scared of. All it takes is random junk form the very smartest, or very dumbest people to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, at the wrong speed, and you could wind up feeling a draft in ways science never thought possible. Falling space junk is a complete lottery since it can happen almost anywhere and almost any time, but for stray bullets, all it takes is someone in a 3 mile radius getting too excited in your general direction, and it could ruin your whole day. And yet despite all of these, we're still here. We, this thin little film of pondscum on a mostly molten ball of rock, barely cooled enough to have a damp surface and spinning through an uncaring abyss of a universe that doesn't even know we're here, are still here. To feel existential dread, you must first exist. If you are scared, it means you're alive, and want to live. That's how I see things.

3:26 My trick for avoiding that is to focus on the whole "we are made of star dust" angle. It helps make me feel much cooler than I really am. 5:29 I've watched it enough times that I don't really have any trouble following along. But also, it helps that I already knew a fair amount of the stuff in here before I first watched it. 8:34 Fun Fact: The English word "Lord" comes from an Old English word, "hlaford" that means "Bread Keeper". Or, in other words, the guy who controlled the food is the guy who is in charge.

Fun Fact: Tamil is the oldest language that is still in use without being changed so much it cannot be recognised as the same For example, if you go back like 4,000 years, you can easily communicate with Tamil speakers if you know present day Tamil You cannot effectively communicate with most other languages if you go back just 500 Years, as the language used today is vastly different from what they had, mostly a few words and the names of languages stuck around

Fun fact, thanks to the Cerruti Mastodon discovery, part of this video may be inaccurate now. The White Sands footprints suggested that humans came to North America around 20k years ago, but the more recent discovery of the Cerruti Mastodon site- which contains strong evidence for possible human activity- was dated to over 100k years ago. Miniminuteman has a great video about it if you're interested.
