I think that the things that really wowed me at the time were the physics engines. When I had gotten into gaming, I was miserably behind. Being able to see things move- to pick up and THROW things without my computer, for lack of a better term, frying was... wow. Your use of the word wow factor is pretty spot on. During their time, Valve's HL2 and Bethesda's Oblivion were certainly very wow.

29:42 In software engeneering there is what we call AGILE work methodology. It is basically what you described, yet more complex with taking into account stakeholders and all that administrative gibberish. In any given AGILE system, teams are often at most composed of 9 people. If we take exemple on SCRUM, which is by far the most frequently used AGILE system, it dictates that all team must be autonomous. This is mostly done through daily meetings where everyone can share their though on the current development, and monthly through a retrospective and a review of the work done that month. All that to say, these kind of systems work. They can be a pain in the ass, but they work. Whenever a team is composed of self-thaught modders and whatnot, the development team most likely will struggle to keep pace and crumble into a mess of unworkable puzzle pieces of code and design template. It is only a guess, but I suppose that this is what happened with Valve at the start. Software engeneering error margin grows exponentially with the complexity of the product. AGILE systems are there to constrain some of that eror margin.
@LucasCunhaRocha2 жыл бұрын
yeah I think the whole "modders as devs" didn't made that much of a difference, keep in mind that Romero did basically the same thing with Daikatana but he kept development in the traditional way and it all went to hell like we know today.

I just found your channel and I adore the outlook you hold on these games, seeing how the perspective of game devving has always had this stagnating mentality just makes me hope that there will be more chances in the future for early and upcoming studios to develop just like Valve did initially and shake big gaming and entertainment mediums down to their core for the betterment of the player. Keep up the great work!

Valve was in a unique and very enviable position with Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington's wealth behind the studio. I do think it's a really interesting development strategy, and I'd say the results speak for themselves, but it's a big risk. I think it only works with the right people, and actually led, in many ways, to their nearly non-existent output this decade. But, that'll be in the next video. I'm glad you enjoy my channel, and hope you like Part 2

Thanks for very interesting material! I love your visual map of game development hierarchy! From my small experience, this fresh Valve model of communication inside of the team, not only could support innovation and healthy relationships, but mostly save tones of money for publishers. It's sometimes enough to ask an dedicated specialist about some specific issues. But in standard procedure they will ask people on the top, wchich are just more directly related to talking... it's hard to imagine how much money the publishers need to throw though the window because of this conventional methodology of indirect communication. ;)

Sorry to gush about a different video in this one's comment section but i had to get castrated to remove what was left after my balls blew off watching Part 2.
