Walter Lantz studios is one of the most overlooked cartoon studios of the Golden age of American Animation. I actually read a 500+ page book on the history of American animation and I don’t think there was even one chapter dedicated to Lantz. Which is odd because they made a TON of cartoons back then, and woody himself appeared in nearly 200 shorts from the golden age!

Completely underrated. My favorite cartoons of all time. I loved everything this studio put out.. even the later ones of lesser quality. I have all the DVDs from Columbia House and the box sets. I wish Universal would release the rest of them. I am waiting..

Couldn't agree more! Woody Woodpecker is great. and those DVD boxsets are quite rare. Hold on to them forever. You know what? I am going to do something more with the history of Woody Woodpecker in a future segment.

The Woody cartoons from the 40’s, especially the ones directed by Shamus Culhane, are classics!!

Walter Lantz was truly an unsung hero of animation. Growing up, if I had a choice, I'd pick a Woody Woodpecker compilation over the standard video store/library fare of Disney or Warner Bros & co. Something about Lantz, Fleischer, and Hanna-Barbera's works spoke to me more than any others. I still have Mr. Lantz to thank for my love of the more obscure studios, and thank you for this great retrospective!

possibly the most underrated animator during that era of animation. like I explained, he had his hands in a lot of things before he even gotten to make Woody Woodpecker. his cartoons just had a certain style/feel to it no cartoon ever had. this was probably due to the 80's iteraation of The Woody Woodpecker Show.

@@yosefdemby8792 That is definitely one of Lantz's shortcomings, but at the age of 5, I wouldn't have known.

@@genethemachine7169 It's okay, so long as you know now. Before working for Lantz, Hardaway wrote for Warner Brothers. He had the personal nickname "Bugs", a term in the early 20th century for "crazy", which arguably defines his sense of humor. He helped create Bugs Bunny, after whom the rabbit is named.

Me as well. Woody had all the great qualities of a cartoon star and should have been mentioned alongside Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse. my theory is that he was always limited to television and never really stayed in the public eye, like Mickey and Bugs has.

I'm curious what helps woody woodpecker stand out from the Looney Tunes and Tex Avery's MGM cartoons. It was the same question I had for Avery's Droopy and other MGM creations until I heard it was morw unrealistic in physics.

First of all, thank you for watching. Secondly. Billy West voiced Ren and Stimpy. Billy took over the duties of voicing Ren after John Kricfalusi left due to his outing with Nickelodeon over the direction of the series. John Kricfalusi voiced Ren for the first two seasons. Hope that clears it up

8:46 That's a lie. Woody was created by former Warner Brothers writer and director Joseph Benson "Ben" "Bugs" Hardaway. Lantz and Stafford weren't even married yet.

i didn't say he drew the character by himself. it was a collaborative effort. it was actually Lantz's idea for Woody. the concept of creation is coming up with the idea itself which Walter conjured up. you have to understand that at the time, when you drew at a studio, no matter if you drew the character or not, it was the property of the studio you were working in. drawing the character doesn't constitute in fully creating something. you have to have the idea itself. this is why I mention Walter over Bugs due to that. also i do mention him Ben Hardaway as co-creator in a factoid 9:44

I also heard about how Lantz and Stafford weren't even married at the time. But i wonder if there is any accurate info somewhere about WHEN did they actually married. Everywhere i search, it only says "1940". But no info on the month
