The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the brain child of Douglas Adams. It was originally a BBC radio show, then a "trilogy" of five books by Adams. It was also a TV show and, I believe, a stage play and, of course, a movie. I've read the books - they're a lot of fun and bursting with originality and a lot of genuinely interesting science fiction ideas. It's funny you mentioned Doctor Who - Adams wrote for Doctor Who in the 70's and 80's. He also wrote a few sketches for Monty Python's Flying Circus. He unfortunately passed away from a heart attack at only age 49. He had written a screenplay for the Hitchhiker's Guide movie and the movie was still in development when he died.

Life, The Universe and Everything was originally going to be Doctor Who script; Slartibartfast would be Tom Baker's Doctor and the Bistromath would be the TARDIS.

It was indeed a touring stage play. I was lucky enough to see it in Kingston-upon-Thames. They had a different narrator for the Book at each performance. On the night I saw it, it was narrated by (if I remember correctly) Anita Dobson. Very different to the flat, male monotone we're used to, but she did a good job. From memory, it was cancelled before completing its run, but it was a long time ago, so I could be wrong about that.

There are further Dr Who connections - the American actress Sandra Dickinson played Trillion in the TV series - she was married to Peter Davison and their daughter married David Tennant.

1:05 I'm sure you've had a few of these, but just in case: • Initially a BBC Radio Drama. • He rewrote it into two books. • BBC serial. • Infogrames Text Based PC game • more books "A Trilogy in 5 parts" • Wrote this movie. He typically rewrote each version and even changes the sequence of events or deliberately contradicts himself, because why not 😆 It's sad that we lost him before he could write the remaining movies in this series. Big fan of the Hitch Hiker's Guide, loved you guys reacting to it

Before Douglas Adams wrote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as radio show (then a book and then a television miniseries I believe) he wrote for the 18th season of Doctor Who. That's the one in between the Key of Time season and Tom Baker's last season (when he was very angry and you could tell). The only story with his name attached was The City of Death, but his fingerprints all over that season. It's much more fun and lighthearted than other seasons of the show.

I first read the book back in the mid-80's. At the time the idea of a Hitchhiker's Guide book that automatically updated with new information was amazing. Now we have the internet with sites like Wikipedia that update with the latest information almost as soon as it happens (sometimes, when a celebrity dies I quickly check Wikipedia to see if I can get there before the celebrity's page updates but, so far, I've never been fast enough.)

"It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination." - My Favorite Quote from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

That end bit was actually from the text based game for DOS. You could play the entire game, hours on hours, but if you failed to feed the dog a cheese sandwich you had to start all over... because the dog fails to stop the invasion in that log entry. I think... it's all a bit hazy as this was 40 years ago. Infocom be praised!

You're right, the face at the end was the writer, Douglas Adams. The automated message about the missiles was the actor who played Arthur Dent in the BBC TV series from the 80s. Lots of people, especially geeky types, enjoy and share Douglas Adams' work. You'll find references in academic computer systems, NASA type stuff, and so on. To be fair though, he wasn't that big on plot beyond some way to string lots of gags and fantastically silly, witty and original ideas together. I can't remember if it is in the film, but Ford Prefect spent all that time on Earth researching for The Guide only to update the entry for Earth from "Harmless" to "Mostly harmless". The romance plot was not in the radio play, TV show nor the books. It was written purely for the film (albeit with the blessing / involvement of Adams) in order for a studio to take it on at all. I also heard at the time that Sci-Fi and Comedy were thought to be mutually incompatible with regards to box office success, but the popularity of the TV series "Red Dwarf" had suggested otherwise. This was, apparently, another factor helping the film adaptation to get the green light.

Oh wow. The romance wasn't in the book or show? Hmm that's weird. I felt like this was one of, if not the major plot point for the movie, just set in the backdrop of the Earth being destroyed and travelling the galaxy. That means that they didn't think it would work without it.

I’ve been binging a lot of your reactions, really really enjoying the good place and Ted lasso! Love the movies you’ve chosen, and would love to recommend some good (fun!) horror eventually. My mom read these books to me as a kid, and I’ve read them to friends over the years. I have two copies of the series, one for reading and the original collection my mom read me as a kid. Douglas Adams was one of a kind and a wonderful writer, his collection of short stories “The Salmon of Doubt” is really lovely too. My parents don’t get along well, and my dad once told me my mom wanted to name me after “that character from that book about towels” in a derogatory way, like how dare she, and I knew he meant Trillian but I said “Slartibartfast?! I could have been named Slartibartfast?!” And even he laughed

I'm very surprised that no one has explained why towels are so important. Basically, it's "about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchiker can have". Not only is it incredibly versatile in its functions (warmth, blanket, lounge on a beach, sail a miniraft, wet it for hand to hand combat, use as distress signal, dry yourself off, etc.), but it also has "immense psychological value". If a nonhitchiker finds that a hitchiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he's fully prepared for any contingency, is clearly a man to be reckoned with, and the nonhitchiker will be more willing to assist the hitchiker in minor matters.

Of course, “trilogy” indicates a series of three, but that’s so conventional. Everyone had already been doing it that way. Douglas Adams certainly wasn’t going to settle for such constraints of definition. Now, a trilogy consisting of five in a series, however… well, that’s a new and interesting way to go about it. So, he did.

The book series is a trilogy of five books, each one weirder than the previous one. There is also the radio series, and a BBC TV series (which sort of covers the first two books) that is worth watching if you can find it. Each version is basically the same story with revisions and changes throughout.

First comment!?!?? Weird there were zero reactions to this then a sudden influx. Love this film, but the BBC series fleshes it out so much more and is quite close to the books. It's totally worth checking out. An interesting part... from the Radio Series, to BBC, to the movie, Addams was invlvoed in all of them. You can see the story change and alter as it develops. Large chunks were dumped and the whole excursion to see John Malkovich was new. The BBC series even gives an answer to the question... though you are still not going to like it lol. btw.. they changed course, but the restaurant is still at yet another end of the universe!

@@RamblersInc been awhile since reading the book, but for the BBC, they just found it. It makes sense since their ship passes through every point of the universe when jumping to hyperspace. The ending is also quite different... I won't say how, but it is not quite so happy. Again, it's worth checking out the series as it explains quite a few things they glossed over here (but handled well) and it's just.... more. This is essentially about 2/3 of the actual story with several adventures not included such as an adventure with Disaster Area, a plutonium rock band from the Gagrakacka Mind Zones!

I have the dvd and there's another HHG entry at the end of the credits, which is actually my favorite. I don't know if it's part of the streamed version. It has to do with an error of scale. **Spoiler** - - A large battle fleet of angry warring aliens declared war on Earth over misinterpreting a random transmission as an insult. From the book and film.... "The mighty ships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the first planet they came across - which happened to be the Earth - where due to a terrible miscalculation of scale the entire battle fleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog". Good animation which nails the punchline. And of course narrated by Stephen Fry.
