My tribute to the 5'10", 180 pound rattle snake named George Atkinson who played for the Raiders from 1968-1977. Starting as a corner before moving to Strong Safety, he was easily outsized by about 3 inches and 50 lbs from most Tight Ends in his era . In his division alone Atkinson would meet the Broncos 6'4" 235 lb Tight End Riley Odoms and the Chief's 6'10" 255 lb TE Morris Stroud twice a year. While yes, the Raiders were always an aggressive team and yes, the Raiders reveled in their ominous image, George Atkinson takes it to a whole other level.
Along with "The Assassin" Jack Tatum, "Dr. Death" Skip Thomas, and "The Godfather Of Bump And Run" Willie Brown, they formed one of the most intimidating secondary's in all of football. They finally got their recognition when their style of play was highlighted in the Raiders first Super Bowl win in 1976.
The two things I respect most after making this video was for one, yes, he most certainly would throw cheap shots out there but he would do it right in your own bench area with no fear. Tackle you out of bounds into your own bench. Not a cheap shot by your own bench or when no one was looking. Atkinson robbed the bank in broad daylight. The other being he is gonna be at a size disadvantage every game but found a way to be a starter for a decade in the NFL.
There is much more research about the Atkinson v Noll trial in 1977. So many more people were involved. Mel Blount was going to retire when he was lumped into the "Criminal Element" which I never heard of before. The NFL being exposed for violence in the game was not good for business and this was the first of many Al Davis vs the NFL moments. www.thefootballodyssey.com/wh...
My favorite quote was when Raiders QB Ken Stabler asked George Atkinson why he broke Russ Francis' nose. George replied "Well, he is 6'5' 230 lbs and I'm 5'11" 180 lbs and I just had to let him know that is how it was going to be today." Atkinson vs Francis got heated in the papers as well with Francis saying Atkinson was a tough football player and was not a dirty player...yep, they made men back then who didn't wine about things, just handled their business.
George Atkinson's battle with CTE: • Former Oakland Raider ...

Tatum played dirty and tried to hurt players. He should have been arrested for assault in Pittsburgh in '75. It's disgusting what the league let him get away with. @@paulmicheldenverco1 They were playing by the rules in force at the time. The Stingley hit was nothing exceptional, in fact one of the Assassins lighter love taps. It had more to do with Stingley being off his feet and the angle of the hit. The Raiders drafted Tatum to do one thing, knock the taste out of people's mouths. Completely legal by the rules of the day. I take you prefer the modern flag football instead of the real deal.

An excellent piece on George Atkinson, probably the best video on him in history. Well done! Very well done. And finally (finally!!) at 02:40 there is the footage of George smashing through the face mask of massive tight end Russ Francis and breaking his nose, early in the 1st quarter of the infamous playoff game between the Raiders and Patriots on Saturday December 18, 1976 in Oakland. I have been looking for that footage for over a decade but could never find it anywhere. Fantastic.

Yeah I have no idea why NFL films kind of hid that hit. After I made the video I found a clip of George coming up to him after the game and putting his arm over his shoulder as they walked off the field I assume saying he didn't mean to hurt him like that. And I read their interviews after and Russ said he would more or less take care of Atkinson and then Atkinson more less said he would take care of Russ and then Russ said George wasn't cheap and was a tough football player. So I gathered from that Atkinson must have been just terrifying to have people backpedaling their comments in the press like that.

The problem with All Pro voting for safties back in the day was they ALWAYS gave it to the two guys who had the most interceptions each year. Often, these two guys were "center-fielder" types who hung back in a deep zone and rarely came up to play the run or bring the wood on hard hits on RBs & WRs. Jack Tatum rocked the entire NFL and changed the sport (which is "supposed to be" the criteria for entrance into the HOF). Every WR & TE in the NFL feared going across the middle and getting CLOCKED by Tatum. It is a Total Joke that soft players were voted First Team All Pro ahead of Tatum solely based on interceptions (Tony Green, Bill Bradley, Tommy Casanova, Dave Elmendorf, Lyle Blackwood, and many others). I saw all those guys play and NONE of them had a slice of Tatum's talent ... and none of them were feared or had a lasting impact on the NFL and in the memory of fans.

Maybe, but he could have also had 2500-3000 fewer yards once the injuries started to stack up. Earl Campbell never avoided contact and he has the career totals to prove it. Don't get me wrong, I loved the way the game was played in those days, and always favored the backs who delivered blows. Sweetness was one of the few who could dish it out AND rack up huge career numbers. With his size though, you'd have thought Franco would have been a little more hard nosed.

Yes, that was the beauty of the Raiders, we came to win, we were proud to be cut throats, intimidators, villains and bullies. We weren’t the only ones, but we were good at being the “Sonny Listons” of football. If we don’t win the game, we gon win the fight! Jack Tatum is my favorite football player and George is in my top 5. Before this footage, I don’t think I can remember George tackling anybody, I remember those neckties though! Them cats were not playing, if they a told a cat not to come over je middle, or don’t catch nothing period, because you know they would be talking shit, that’s what the hell they meant. But yeah, they were dirty. Reflects where they played.

This is the true definition of a headhunter, dude did every penalty in the book that is illegal now and a few illegal then: horse collar, leading with helmet, late hits, hits waaaaaay out of bounds, unnecessary roughness, facemasks, defenseless receivers, helmet to helmet, .....

very good player Atkinson was. I dont think he was that dirty though. Remember the close line or hook Was LEGAL back then. The only real dirty thing he did was break Russ Francis's nose. Other than that i dont think he was that dirty. And look at Mel Blount picking up and pile driving Cliff branch head first into the turf. That was much more dirty

Football the way it SHOULD be played..."the Assassin", Lester "the Molester" Hayes (that probably offends some snowflake somewhere, Skip "Dr. Death" Thomas and George Atkinson embodied Raider defensive football! Especial THANKS to Coach Madden for allowing them to take it to 'em. I refuse to call them the Las Vegas Raiders...they will always be either "the Raiders" or the Oakland Raiders to me!

As much as i love NFL and been watching it every year since 80s, it's hard to watch it now or past 10 years because it's so soft. Same applies to NBA. Athletes back then we're built with a gladiator heart. Iron mind
