The HMS Royal George was a British Royal Navy warship that met its tragic end on August 29, 1782. The ship, a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line, was one of the largest and most powerful warships in the world at the time. She was launched in 1756 and served in various naval engagements during the Seven Years' War. However, her most infamous event would come years later, during the American Revolutionary War.
The Tragedy of HMS Royal George
On the morning of August 29, 1782, the HMS Royal George was anchored in Portsmouth Harbor, England, undergoing repairs. The ship was at rest, surrounded by other ships of the fleet, but was still fully rigged and loaded with sailors, officers, and civilians, including women and children. It had a complement of over 800 people aboard.
