Am I the only one to think that Richard was being a bit of a rude smartass when he corrected Martin? I mean the reason why Gandalf chose to take A Hobbit on their quest was indeed that Hobbits smell differently, but that doesn't answer the question of why Gandalf chose Bilbo out of all the Hobbits he could chose from and if/why he saw that there was a hero within Bilbo. Martin actually answered that question perfectly and there was absoltly no need to "correct" him. I don't mind Richard being proud of knowing more Tolkien trivia than most of the other actors, but this correction here was just plain unnecessary and rude. But anyway, now that my rant is over, let me just add that I absolutley love Martin's and Andy's reaction to the unnecessary correction at 6.44 :-D

I have absolutely no idea if the people thinking that Richard was being rude are British or not...if the answer is in the negative, then it needs to be pointed out that British humour is LADEN with sarcasm..even between good friends. As a massive RA fan of sixteen years, I have NEVER seen him be even remotely, rude, sullen, unengaging, or even indifferent to, a fan, a journalist, a crew or cast member..even in certain interviews where a little tetchiness from the subject would have been completely understandable, given the quality of the interview/er, he has been polite, funny, chatty when allowed to be and 'sitting back', somewhat, when another guest is speaking. Obviously I do not have access to Martin's thoughts, but Martin and Andy's facial exchanges would be something seen in a pub, restaurant, or any situation with a group of (British) friends sitting chatting. We constantly rib each other, our family members, our peers, our colleagues...in my not inconsiderable knowledge of both of these actors' 'public' personalities AND a full working relationship with my country's sense of humour...the jury states, unequivocally, that Martin was being sarcastic (about RA) to Andy. And let's not forget the fact that Martin, the lovely bloke that he is, knew that the interview wasn't only being taped, but would be on KZbin within minutes...do you really think he's that daft that he's going to react in a way (if you think he's reaction was 'serious') that might cause problems in his working relationship with a fellow cast member? Of course he isn't !!

Martin is a good actor, but nothing extraordinary, so he should be less full of himself and accept corrections by a person like Richard, who has read Tolkien's books and know very well Middle Earth

That correction was super.. childish sounding. Not even in a rude / smartass way, but the thing he pointed out was like something a child would say. "NO, NO, GANDALF SAID YOU SMELL FUNNY TOO, REMEMBER!?" His smell wasn't even a crucial part of the story. It's like he didn't pay attention to any in depth analysis of the character and took it straight word for word right out of the script and said "this is how it is." The part about Bilbo's smell was literally nothing more than additional reasoning to persuade the dwarves as to why he was a proper candidate for the quest they had set in motion. Richard, to me, really gives off that annoying vibe where he treats this wonderful story like a 'strict script' rather than this magical immersive fairytale that makes you wish it were reality. Every other actor has expressed deep connections with their characters or deep analysis' of their characters while conveying how magical the film had felt to them and how qualities of the film like the 'fellowship' / family really stuck with them in the end. Richard literally just goes ONLY far enough to say "this was my character. I played him strictly. I enjoyed myself."

cdwwg I think he was only being silly and geeky, which is not the same as being childish. Nothing to take so seriously, and Martin himself is known for goofing off frequently. Also, your assertion that Richard hasn't expressed any deep connection and analysis of his character (among other things) plainly shows that you haven't listened to anything he's talked about extensively over the numerous interviews he did for the Hobbit movies. Sorry, but I could point you to any number of videos where he speaks passionately and in depth on exactly the topics you claimed he was lacking in. False statements made out of laziness are irritating, especially when it's so easy to look up the material in question right here on youtube. Just saying.
