20:14 In the book, bilbo can’t think of the answer and gollum approaches eager to eat him, so bilbo means to ask for more time but he’s so panicked, all that comes out is, “time!!!” which turns out to be the correct answer.😂😂😂

One of the few reactors who recognizes the implications of Bilbo NOT killing Smeagol. Can't wait for the second movie... Extended Edition of course.

Yes, the extended version is really important for the second film, as it answers a question that's never addressed in the theatrical cut.

At the time of the Hobbit, Arwen was living in Lothlorien with her grandmother, Galadriel. It was there that she first met Aragorn. She only returned to Rivendell after the vents of the Hobbit. BTW, Galadriel was never at the Council - she used what you would call an Astral Projection of herself to attend. One powerful enought to be physically touchable. (Later on, she will actually be present in another remote place....)

"This is Sting...you've seen it before, haven't you, Gollum?" Now you know when he saw it previously. I love the fact that they did the riddle game as one long scene, just letting the two characters interact for an extended period. It was the first scene they shot for this film, just to get them back into the rhythm of things.

The Hobbit was written as children stories while LotR was written for an older audience, which explains the difference in tone. It's a fun adventure, and yes the songs were also in the book, so it's entertaining but not as dark or deep. If you start with The Hobbit since it was written first, Gandalf dying in Fellowship is both more shocking but also more believable because it feels like they're getting rid of an old familiar character to move forward with the new group. I remember crying when I read that part because Gandalf was my favorite. The riddles in the dark with Gollum was my favorite part since I watched the animated movie as a little kid, so it's nice to see you guys actually enjoyed it too.

The reason for the songs is Tolkien was a language expert and loved poetry set to music. He wrote several of the poems and the filmmakers altered them slightly and set them to music to honor Tolkien's intent. As far as why the Eagles don't take them to the mountain is that the Eagles are the messengers of the King of the Valar (the Tolkien angel-gods) and only in dire need. Their role is not to overcome all of the challenges the Dwarves will face but to get them out of that 1 fight. The Dwarves still needed to face the rest of their challenges on their own.

Good explanation! I would like to learn more about the angel-gods. I only know the films. I’m too hyper to be able to sit and read the books.

@@eddietucker7005I think the Silmarillion is one of the main sources for all the lore. One of the best love stories are Beren and Luthien, who are based off of Tolkiens love story with his wife

Also, the eagles probably didn't want to get roasted by the dragon. Note that birds returning to the mountain was remarkable.

Sauron cannot sense the ring while Gollum is in the tunnels of the Misty Mountains due to the iron in the rocks. This leads to the ring prolonging Gollum's life. The ring intentionally leaves Gollum as a way to get out of the tunnels and return to Sauron who is building up his power following his "death" at the hands of Isidour centuries earlier.

The reason why they didn’t use the Eagles to fly all the way to the Lonely Mountain was because the Eagles refused to fly out of their region. Men would shoot them down with bows for fear of the Eagles killing their livestock.

This is tricky...they stretched a single book out into 3 movies, unlike The Lord of the Rings which was 3 books already. It has its qualities and it's so great to see some familiar faces again but, it will just never be as good to me. By no fault of its own, it may not be fair to compare. That being said, absolutely worth seeing, enjoy the back story and Unexpected Journey!

There is a fan edit of the Hobbit, made by M4, which is just one movie of around 4.5 hours long. A lot of the original material got cut and the movie is way more true to the book this way. They cut the whole necromancer arc and the Tauriel-Legolas-Kili triangle doesn’t exist. If I’m right Tauriel isn’t even in it. It’s more about Bilbo and less about the dwarves. I honestly prefer M4’s version and since I’ve seen it I only watch that one and then continue with the LOTR trilogy.

The Hobbit was written for children which is why you have more fun singing. Lord of the Rings was written for adults. Less singing in the movies, but there are songs in the books that are a bit more mature.

This is my favorite of the three Hobbit movies. And halfway into #2. After that, there’s so much war that wasn’t in the book. Almost all of the fighting so far was not in the book except for the trolls and falling through the orcs “front doorstep”, ie, trap. I love all the movies but most of the fighting doesn’t tell a story, it was added to hold the attention of the male audience, and it worked, because most guys love it. The books are incredibly well-written and I’ve read the hobbit, and the LOTR trilogy over and over for decades. The right audiobook voice is excellent too. There’s one guy who created it during the pandemic and he became just as good as listening to the professional actors.

My first introduction to Tolkien was the late 70's cartoon "The Hobbit", I was like 7 years old. So I might be a bit biased but I like the book "The Hobbit" and the movie better than "Lord of the Rings" The movie series "The Hobbit", like the book seemed quicker paced but equally epic. I love how Peter Jackson and crew added so much to the story while stayed true to original. The character development and added layers to the story worked amazingly well. The added depth seemed to really allow the story to breath and develop. This series of movies is one of my favorite of all time.

I'm glad you are both enjoying it and look forward to your takes on the next 2. :-) This one gets a lot of hate from book fans because the filmmakers took a lot of liberties with the Hobbit book. I'm a book fan myself but i did very much love these movies, including the unpopular high frame rate versions in theaters... The songs, and the riddles game, are the most faithful parts of the film adaptation. I was personally delighted to hear the misty mountains song and 'Break the Knives' but could have lived without the song in Rivendell and the Goblin caves (which are Extended Edition only).

this whole trilogy is fantastic - I don't think it is inferior in any way to the original trilogy - of course it's not about saving the world from total destruction, but it comes pretty darn close - because if evil had not been stopped from achieving its goals at this point in time, things would have been ten times harder to manage by the time we get to Bilbo's 111th birthday

@@joeramirez5460 True, he should be 10, but due to the Fellowship movie not having the 17 years between the Party, and Frodo leaving the Shire, then Aragorn would be about 27 during the Hobbit movies.

The elves in Rivendell once crossed the sea into the west to live with ten Valar and learn from them. They Returned to Middle Earth having sworn an Oath to Recover the Silmarills. The Elves you are about to see are the Wood Elves who remained behind and are more rustic. The Dwarves were not created by the God Eru Illuvatar. They were created by the Valar along with the Ents. Morgoth was the Evil Valar who remained in Middle Earth to gain dominion over Elves men and Dwarves. Sauron was a Maia like Gandalf an a disciple of Morgoth. Morgoth created many of the evil creatures. Trolls are a Mockery of Ents. Arwen would have been in Lothlorien with Galadriel. Her mother was captured by Orcs and she escaped but was so damaged that she left middle earth and sailed to the undying lands. The reason Gandalf and the other Wizards is in the form of the old man that can die is because they didn’t want another Sauron or more Balrogs, servants of Sauron, seeking dominion over men.

The whole "thunderbattle" with the stone giants was based on like two sentences in the book. The mountains to not come to life, and the dwarves weren't in any direct danger. They were trying to sleep in a recess in the mountain, semi-protected from the rain and cold, while the giants were making a lot of noise throwing rocks around for sport. I recommend the Rankin-Bass animated version of The Hobbit. It's one fairly short movie, much more accurate to the book, and includes all (or at least most) of the songs. "Fifteen birds in five fir trees..." Although obviously, you'll want to wait until you're done with this trilogy, because spoilers.
