God this scene is chilling. It does buildup and tension better than most thrillers and horror films. They take the time to show him panicking, going into a frenzy over the ring, so we see how obsessed he is with it. Then the slow change in his reflection when he starts to out the pieces together. He's so slow to turn around, even looking betrayed even though he himself was probably about to use the ring to kill Bilbo. The terror on Bilbo's face before he screams and runs and you're gripping the edge of your seat thinking "RUN BILBO GET TF AWAY FROM HIM" THAT is how you do tension

Note the role of the ring in this scene: Perhaps, assuming that it was not lost by chance, then we can say that it fell out of its own accord. The ring fell out on purpose so that Bilbo would take it and become a thief, which he had never been before, and to betray Golum, knowing how dependent he was on him. Ring once again proves that it passes from hand to hand solely of its own accord, and not by chance, thereby gradually pursuing its main goal - to get to its creator in any way, while revealing the most negative qualities of the characters who owned it. It is worth remembering the same Frodo - it passed to him with the hope that he would take it to Mordor, thereby returning to Sauron. Ring hoped that Frodo would not be able to destroy it, but when Frodo was in doubt whether to keep it, ring decided to let Golum bite off Frodo's finger. Ring realized that Frodo could not return it to Sauron, since Frodo himself became dependent, therefore, in order to fulfil its plan, ring wanted to return back to Golum, but it didn’t work out. Ring to the last, taking advantage of Golum's obsession, wanted to survive in the scene when it lay on Golum's hand, drowning in lava.
