Tbh I don't care about Tauriel being in the film and I think everyone should stop criticising her and saying she should get lost. She was Peter's idea to bring more female characters into the story and personally I think it was a good idea. Films aren't meant to be exactly like the books, they are based on them and Peter may have wanted it to reflect Tolkien's version of Middle-Earth but they are meant to be different and have different features and characters so everyone should just stop saying horrible things about Tauriel and Kili.

@@cant_handle_deeznuts I think it's because of the love triangle. I actually don't really count it as love triangle because Tauriel only has eyes for Kili. She never reciprocated any of Legolas' feelings for her nor did Legolas actually acted on it. I don't think she even knew how Legolas feels about her. It was only Thranduil who mentioned it to her. If I may believe it, Tauriel opened Legolas' eyes that Dwarves aren't that bad hence the bromance between Legolas and Gimli in LOTR. I just wish they explored her character more or some background story before the events of Fellowship, like some sort of short story like Tolkien's Aragorn/Arwen after Return of the King.

@@deeamparo1703 Exactly what I was thinking. The love triangle felt very downplayed. And it seemed to be there to give both Kili and Legolas some character development. Considering how little Legolas got in LOTR (even Tolkien himself considered him to be the least developed or useful member of the Fellowship), it made sense that Jackson wanted to flesh his character out more.

@@deeamparo1703 The fact that a lot of Peter Jackson's Hobbit had little or nothing to do with any of the elves backstory makes all of this discussion kind of moot. Thranduil for a good example, does have a part in Tolkien's book, but most of his charactor (including a name!) was made up of whole cloth, while much of what defined his charactor and his change in attitude about the Dwarves was left out of the movie, in exchange for interactions between his son, Legolas, (who also is not a part of Tolkeins story) Tauriel, and their star crossed "doomed from the beginning" not even a triangle love story, from the movie. While a bit disappointed, I accepted long ago that the movie "The Hobbit" was a fun movie, interesting, well made, with some great, if made up charactors in it, loosely based on Tolkienian canon. We all need to be reminded of that from time to time. It's all good. One can love the books, and the movies, too.

I think people have been really harsh on the Hobbit, I have seen critics give much worse films better reviews including 300 Rise of an Empire and the horror show that was the 4th Transformers film. I don't understand why people are comparing them to the untouchable LOTR trilogy and the books. These are great films and you can see how passionate the cast and crew are when making them and then when its released you get snobby, arrogant critics saying "not in the book, not in the book."

People are comparing it to lotr because these movies clearly try to act as a full fledged prequels and not like more of a stand alone like the book. We have story threads and characters that are clear references to lort which were not present im the book. Legolas, the references to the Eye of Sauron, and entire side story dedicated to Sauron and his Nazgul, the list goes on.

No not all orcs are CGI, but when it comes to taking aerial shots of large orc forces they do 'copy and paste' them. They did it with the Rohirrim in RotK, the whole second rank iirc were copied.

Martin freeman flipping the bird at 1:15. He’s done it a couple times during the movies while putting the ring on and off. I don’t know whether it’s intentional on his part for fun or if it’s just accidental but it funny either way. Edit: after watching a 1 minute video of him purposely flipping the bird on set several times, I’m of the firm belief that him flipping the bird while removing the ring in the movies is on purpose.

Both trilogies were filmed in a similar manner: Principal footage for all 3 movies was shot all in one long project in New Zealand, some on outdoor locations and some done on indoor sets. The cast was called back just to do some pickup scenes for the 2nd movie, and a year later, for the third.
