If I had describe the hobbit trilogy with three words, it would be: Not good enough. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the movies are bad. They just aren't what they were supposed to be, and that is "a hobbit named Bilbo goes on adventure". In the movies, Bilbo isn't the main character, he isn't and that's the problem for me. Instead, We get so much irrelevant stuff, Kili-tauriel romance being the tip of the iceberg. Gandalf's quest had potential, but they showed it in at the expense of screen time with actors like Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage. These guys are amazing in this third film and it left me feeling like "why didn't we get see more of you two, interacting and developing characters in this trilogy".

Unfortunately, if the Star Wars Prequels are any indication, "not good enough" automatically means "worst movie ever" when it comes to a sequel/prequel to a beloved franchise. And believe me, I've seen people calling the hobbit that.

I think the Lord of the Rings trilogy benefits from being extended, especially the return of the king, and I also think that the Hobbit Battle of the five armies benefits from being extended, but the first two hobbit films I do not think benefit from it. They were already long and padded as they were and nothing that was added back in was really important or cool, to me at least.

sadly i think thats reserved for the extended edition. it feels like a cash grab this time around. where in the extended editions of the first two movies,it felt like they just made up stuff to put in afterwards, because people expect pj to release extended editions of his movies...... but with this one i felt as if they had cut down the version that should have been the cinematic cut. i really cant understand why people like this one the best only because its the shortest... for me,thats the only and or biggest problem!!! no resulutions and explanations in the end....

I really enjoyed the whole hobbit saga, for sure it would make it better being 2 movies, but i still can''t complain for more middle-earth. I dont see it as 2 different things (hobbit and LotR), right now its an amazing 6 movie franchise that i love, thought for sure the LotR movies are still superior than the hobbit ones, but i enjoyed watching everything.

morning morality i would also think how rushed that would be. i mean do you know what happens in this one book? its crazy:trolls, goblins, wargs, spiders, elves, dragons, armies all flying by. they needed to take their time. but i would have appreciated if the padding was a bit more meaningful. its all fascinating what tolkien invisioned but it feels unneeded here at times. the sauron side story was unneeded. and there are some other akward moments when they suddenly start talking about the seven rings of the dwarves or the tomb of the witch king of angmar,or how gundabad is somehow important to these events....... but ironically all of this bullshitty detail doesnt bother me while watching these movies, because im just entertained and happy!

morning morality Considering the bonus romantic subplot that wasn't needed & Legolas being in the movie for fanservice only(since he wasn't in the book) I think you might have made 2 movies work by cutting out the romance & Legolas. Keep the lady (since this was a big sausage fest) but not for the sake of unnecessary romance. & again don't add a character to a already big cast when you have several characters to write from scratch since from what I heard th Dwarves barley have any characterization in the book at

I really hate the Hobbit movies. I've mostly kept my mouth shut and tried to not be a grump over these last three years, but time's up. Disclaimer: I'm a Tolkien enthusiast, and the books are important to me, so that's where this is coming from. The whole idea of blowing up a single children's novel into three films is ill-fated. In this case, the result was that the story was perverted into things it isn't. From including existing characters in the films not in the book, to inventing a new character for the sake of cheap romance, this franchise had no leg to stand on as far as respect for the extremely well-loved source material. Apart from fan complaints, the movies were pretty bad in their own right. They looked fake and were generally pretty cheesy. Other things too, but let's leave it at that. End rant.

My opinion: Unexpected Journey: Pretty damn good, easily my favorite of the trilogy. Desolation of Smaug: Also good (Smaug is such a badass), but a lot of the third act felt like filler and the romance was pointless. Battle of the Five Armies: Awesome action, Bilbo and Thorin's relationship is great, loved the infighting between the Dwarves, Elves, and the men of Laketown, but the first act is a little slow.

TheLord SilverCockroach Okay my math is a bit off...you listed more than 5 armies. Also the goats were ridden by the dwarfs and not a separate army of their own and the worms were used only to make tunnels then they went back inane were never seen again so I would not consider them an individual army of their own. Now the Eagles...I would be ok considering those an army since they showed up at the end to save the day and everybody kept saying..."the Eagles are here".

SPOILER ALERT!!! . . . . . . . This movie starts with a big problem. In the second movie "The Desolation of Smaug", the dragon is basically the main antagonist. A villain that caused fear to the extreme. But, in this movie, he's nothing. He is defeated in the first 10-15 minutes of the movie. I say, why didn't they just leave this battle in the second movie? Why didn't they end the second movie, "The Desolation of Smaug" when they killed the Dragon? Why did they just cut the movie when he said "I'm fire, I am death" so the rest of the battle would be in the first 15 minutes of "The Battle of the Five Armies"? That's not right. He caused so much fear in the second movie, so end the movie by killing him, that way it would feel more complete. Leaving this battle for the beginning of this movie wasn't smart. This epic battle should have been left in the second movie. He is not important in this movie.

Sure, there are some things I'm not too keen on within this trilogy, but the films are still mindblowingly brilliant. I can't wait for the extended edition. Best film saga ever made. The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings films will proudly sit in my film collection forever, and it's been a brilliant journey! From a six year old boy, playing with his action figures, re-writing the mines of Moria scene in his notebook, (desperately trying to remember all the dialogue), to a nineteen year old man, watching the prequel trilogy, and reminiscing on his childhood days. Thank you Peter Jackson and the whole team for bringing Tolkien's amazing world to life on the big screen. Its been an honour to go to the cinema and watch these films over the years. I love all six movies. I just wish more people did.

I was sad when it ended, simply because it's been a long journey and it's finally over. I remember going to see the first Lord of the Rings film back in college with my partner at the time, then the second one with that same partner, and the third one with someone else entirely. Then the same thing again with these three films; I remember I'd just come out of hospital when the first one came out, and it was the first time I'd been out with my friends in a long time. Then second, and now the third and final chapter; in what was ultimately six movies and almost a decade and a half of my life. Fun times Peter Jackson, thank-you!

I only have 2 problems with BOFA: 1.A way too much Legolas (he was kind of one of the biggest heroes in BOFA,even he is not in the book, when he killed in LOTR cave troll, and when he surfs on the shield, that was mind blowing, and after The Hobbit,I will never see Legolas as the same guy) 2. The battle actually was not the battle of the five armies,it was pretty much the battle of the main characters (and Legolas) we need to see epic armies clashes, but not just main characters (I hope we will get more epic armies fighting in extended edition)

Kind of disappointed you didn't mention Thorin at all, even in a spoiler-free context. Richard Armitage was magnificent as Thorin, and he definitively commanded every scene he was in. I was absolutely drawn to him, wondering how he was going to react next because it was never quite what I expected.... The development of his character and Bilbo's really heightened the trilogy for me. I absolutely adore all three films, and am not ashamed to say I might of cried a little in this last one (not just because of the ending, but because the series was coming to an end). Right in the damn feels....

They could have easily made The Hobbit into 2 movies - 3 hours each = total of 6 hours. Instead, they did 3 movies - 3 hours each = total of 9 hours. If they really wanted to make 3 movies, they could/should have just made each movie 2 hours which still = a total of 6 hours. This would make the runtime the same as if they did 2 movies but would still get all the money they were milking for. That's 3 hours that could have been shaved off and besides, the average runtime for a movie is 2 hours anyway. No need to stay for 3 if it isn't necessary.

I loved it, but unfortunately the first 10 minutes were disappointing and could have been added to the end of the last film and Smaug was just really disappointing in this film. Now, I know how Star Wars fans feel about George Lucas. I was hoping this was going to be the Revenge Of The Sith of the trilogy but it turned out to be The Phantom Menace, instead. Peter Jackson royally screwed up King Kong and he made the same mistakes here. He introduced or developed characters we never see again, like Bard, Alfred, Dain and Beorn (who was supposed to have saved the day). The humor is not funny. What was the scene at the end when they're auctioning off his belongings? WTF? What happened to the Arkenstone or Thorin's oak shield? I wasn't against Legolas being there but he was annoying in these films. LOTR was brilliant and nobody can ever take away from Peter Jackson. People wondered if he could cram all that story into three movies. He did it masterfully. If Jackson was given two to three hours only to tell The Hobbit story, he would have did it again. I'm very disappointed. My only hope is that a another studio does The Hobbit over, in one film.

i just really dont understand those people who said the movie was horrible. 1. Do you even know how much work did they put in that movie???? go watch some behind scenes stuff to see how hard it is.... 2. I absolutely loved it, even more because it is THE LAST MIDDLE EARTH MOVIE THAT WILL EVER BE MADE!!!! Cant you just enjoy it without complaining? You wont see another movie about Frodo Bilbo, Gandalf etc anymore..... 3 I have heard that, if a movie can make you cry either from happiness or sadness, that means it is a good movie, and i cryed like a little baby, in the cinema, especially at the end where Kili and..., well, i dont want to spoil it for those who havent yet seen the movie (i was lucky to get a cheaper ticket and i went a month later it was released on the big screen, and when i went in a 240 seat auditory, there were only like 8 or 9 people,so i could cry there as much as i want and nobody saw me doing it....)... still cry whenever i remember that part since he is since the beginning my favorite character Q~Q....... I know everyone has their own opinion, but, cant you just appreciate the hard work (not just the film maker, but also Tolkien's) that was put to make this immortal story that will stay with us even when we die? Some of you went to see it on the big screen, but our children wont be able to see them, they will only have a chance to see it from a torrent or on TV, they wont experience it on the big screen like we did.... You should appreciate it and love it the way it was made and dont complain..... If you dont like the movie, then stick with you books, i like to see action and feels, thats why i love ALL of the movies....

Well I can agree that it's not horrible, but Peter Jackson can fuck up too. For example, he simply is bad at making battle or fighting scenes. Yes, his team has good choregraphers, and can throw huge amounts of warriors at the screen, and he can build tension, but the fighting itself is complete garbage. You just see orcs ragdolling everywhere at the first half-assed hit. It's fine when you're watching an adventure movie, but in this movie it's mostly about fighting (at least a very large part of it), and Peter Jacksons' weakness shows more and more. I could go on about other things but this one made me stop the movie to go do something else instead. Also, Tolkien wrote books you can appreciate, and the movies aren't his work. Also, there's nothing wrong with not appreciating the movie that much. And complaining and criticism is very healthy for the movie industry.

Car Too It's not about realism, it's about badly made scenes. They don't even match the LotR standards. When you have a movie with 50% fighting or whatever, show the damn battle scenes, not the shitty street fighting with pretty much no choregraphy, tension or anything remotely interesting. Or some duels that aren't even believable or anything because it's just guys jumping around or whatever.

TreeroyJ One of the main issues with the overuse of CGI was that there wasn't a balance in The Hobbit movies like there was in the LOTR's. The LOTR's had more practical effects/set-pieces/people in costume. The Hobbit films were almost cartoony at times. The orcs/goblins in LOTR's looked infinitely better, more realistic, and memorable than the ones in The Hobbit. Yes, of course the big, wide, battle shots with thousands of elves, dwarves, men, and orcs had to be CG characters, but all of the close up shots should've been actors in make-up.

Don't think its wrong, one of the movies needed a scene like that, as I suspect most people who only watched the movies had no idea what power Galadriel wields. Books have hundreds of pages of lore to explain the world, movies don't have that luxury, so they obviously need to change things to introduce characters and environment. One of my favorite scenes of the whole movie trilogy for sure.

I really enjoyed the Hobbit movies. I almost liked them as much as the Lord of the Rings. And I was a fan before the Lord of the Rings were movies. I am a fan of the book and I am a fan of the movie. I do think that the movie was a bit to CGI heavy or too animated. If they would have stuck with the kind and amount of CGI in the Hobbit as they had on Lord of the Rings it would look a lot sharper. But I don't hold it against Peter Jackson because he got caught up in the modern tech of the day. The Lord of the Rings broke ground with its motion-capture technology as well as its key-frame animation. And PJ was looking for a way to enhance the already perfect CGI model and he couldn't do it. Which is to no fault of his considering he already reached near perfection with 'Rings. The story of the Hobbit is in fact a 276 page book, so not exactly 300 as is in most critic's minds. Each movie encompasses about, ok I will round, 100 or so pages. So if you look at the first hundred pages of the Hobbit book in fact does end at the end of the chapter Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire which is exactly where the first movie ends. Exactly. The first chapter, An Unexpected Party ends on page 26. So it's about one fourth of the first part of the book. So In my mind, the 45 min exposition is justified. Azog I don't understand. Now don't get me wrong, I think the character development is fantastic and the acting is well done its just the misplacement of a character that has no place in the story. He's technically killed by King Dain. So he isn't actually alive in the timeline of the Hobbit. But his son Bolg is alive and kicking. So if they would have used Bolg as a pursuer of Thorin and company it would have made more sense to me since he ends up being the one to lead the Battle of the Five Armies' orc army in the book. The whole Dol Guldur / Necormancer story is totally justified and 100% accurate. People complain and say that they don't want to know what happens to Gandalf when he leaves/ or/ its not important to the story of the Hobbit. Well, what Gandalf does may not be told to us in the book but it his often disappearances, especially before Mirkwood, begs the question "Why the hell would Gandalf encourage a quest and then ditch it halfway through at the most important part?". The answer is given to us in the Appendix of the Return of the King. He goes to Dol Guldur to discover and seek out a great evil power there. And not only in the Appendix does Tolkien tell us this. Gandalf directly speaks of it in the council of Elrond in Fellowship. He says he stood toe to toe with the Necormancer and it was there that he knew that it was Sauron. And that he barely escaped with his life. We then learn in the Appendix that the white council storms Dol Guldur twice in the war of the ring. Once right before the Battle of the Five Armies, and right at the same time between the battle of Pelanor fields and the Battle at the Black Gate. Radagast the Brown. I love Radagast. And we lost on that one in the Fellowship when we didn't get to see him warn Gandalf. PJ even said in the making of the Fellowship movie that he wished he could find a way to include Radagast and Tom Bombadil in the Fellowship but there was no time. And people bitched and moaned about how he ruined the movie without these two characters. Well PJ now gives you Radagast and you bitch and moan about how he's not the Radagast you pictured. Truth be told I wish he had a more prominent part in the final installment. Beggars cant be choosers :). Beorn was superbly done. Those scenes were exactly as the book described down to the final detail. I'm not going to rant anymore but now you see my, and many others, point. The movie is a movie, the book is a book. Nothing more can be said.

SPOILERS Saw the movie last week and I'm glad to see you gave it that score. I enjoyed the movie, though I really felt you had to watch The Desolation of Smaug right before it to have the proper viewing experience. What did bother me was the lack of a rap up to the stories of the other characters besides Bilbo. What happened to Dale and Erebor? As this is all explained in the book I'm hoping the Extended Edition will fill in the blanks there. I also really felt they missed an opportunity of Balin saying: 'Now that the Orcs are defeated, this might be the right time to take back Khazad-Dûm!' (which would have made a far more relevant easter egg than dragging Aragorn into the story). Maybe they'll add that in an extra epilogue in the Extended Edition? I would have loved some more Beorn as well. Legolas absolutely had to be in the movie (since Thranduil is his dad), though it's a shame he had to get so much screen time while Beorn only got 10 seconds. Aside from that I missed the battle wagon which featured in the trailer, along with the dwarven cavalry. I'm guessing once the Extended Edition is released a lot of these issues will be sorted out and the movie will make for a better send-off to Middle-Earth.

As much as I would love it, you could never pull it off. It would be the most expensive television show ever made. Game of Thrones stretches the budget of where they can take CGI, the Silmarillion stretches to astronomical heights. You're dealing with literal gods and mountain-sized monsters.

Smaug was the thing that got me so pumped at the beginning of this film when I saw it yesterday. Benedict Cumberbatch has a way of hitting deep into your soul. When the inevitable came for him, the film for me lost a good 20% of its value and never fully recovered. One of the greatest Dragon characters ever portrayed on screen, and he was never used to his full potential. Still a great entertaining film, none the less.

Have you heard of or read The Ainulindale? It's the entire creation mythos and lore of the whole Tolkien universe; predating all the races he came up with. From before middle-earth was made, to the rise and fall of both dark lords.

Probably the weakest one out of the 6, at least for me. They could have done a lot more with Smug himself… "5 armies" - orcs, elves, people and dwarves… 5 armies? (2 orc armies count as 1).

From someone who loved the previous two movies I was very disappointed about this one. They wasted Smaug, who had an incredible introduction in 2, in the first 10 minutes of the movie, Thorin starts losing his mind but then snaps out of it for no reason and the CGI during the battle was not good. The Tolkien edit, which is a fan edit that turns the trilogy into a single 4h30m movie, is proof that they could have easily made the trilogy into at least 2 2h15m movies.

I just watched the movie today (2015) and I have to say that if you haven't seen ANY of the other movies, you are gonna feel lost at parts. And the end battle takes FOREVER to the point where you yawn at some pretty epic looking parts. Other than that, it's a solid movie.

WreckNRepeat I knew you'd bring up Mad Max, it's a great action movie, and so is the raid, but I wouldn't use the word "amazing" precisely because of how simple the plot is. John Wick and die hard are okay but pretty generic and overrated. Star Wars does NOT have a simple plot. You have theforce, you have all kinds of secrets revealed in later movies, you have a ton of history with fathers and masters and previous wars, very fleshed out universe.

+Dan King its literally the same in the books though, its too much action because its the end of the book. the hobbit is only one book and was split into three movies, thats why the first one has little action and more story, the second one is a bit more mysterious with more story and the third one is the final battle. they couldnt have made it any better without changing big parts of the movie or the plot

Does anyone know if gandalf was really captured and that fight [galadriel, elrond VS. the 9 kings] really happened? PLS HALP i remember not I read all the books including silmarillion but i do not recall that at all D: (plus they could have made it clearer that saruman was acting fishy and Gandy was suspicious of him) also, this movie was bad. so much face palming. it had cool action scenes but that does not make it good at all. fuck the romance, why did they think they needed romance to justify a female character existing? god damn it.

+Gent M The thing is... what was spoiler talk supposed to actually talk about? This movie was 90% action scenes with very little plot that wouldn't be already established. They killed the dragon, then they wanted dwarven gold, humans to rebuild their houses, elves because of elven gems that happened to be there, so they came, they negotiated, wiht Sauron subplot in the meantime, then orcs came and the rest of the movie was fighting with orcs. That's it. What is there to talk really?

Movie was so horrible, every single scene had a facepalm in it, right from the beggining with how bard kills smaug, the mayors aide is supposed to be a comedic break but just stalled the entire thing, what happened to Beorn DURING the battle? All it shows is him falling 500 feet onto a pile of orcs and then nothing. Where were the other 10 dwarves that weve been following this entire time during the battle? Love story about dwarf and elf that just fell flat. Kili and fili die like b!tches.the earth eaters...just no, no, NOOOOO... The part where legolas hangs onto the bat that takes him exactly where he needs to go -_-. Not to mention when he does that scene in gundabad theyre about 700 miles away from the battle but make it back the same day. The aftermath of the battle isnt covered at all (what happened to the mountain, what happened to dale, what happened to bard, /beorn, what happened with the treasure, what happened to the arkenstone) Imho this wasnt even the hobbit it was just a story that had a bunch of similar names and places. 95% of the battle of five armies was straight out of Peter Jacksons ass and he completly raped the book. If you want to know how the battle really happened read the book, its only 35 pages from when smaug leaves to the end of the battle, youll be done in 15 minutes
