The Hokkien lion dance, also known as the Green Lion dance, is performed by Hokkien-speaking communities in Fujian (China) and Taiwan. It is a type of Chinese southern lion dance, distinguished by its green colour and a round, flat mask. Some also refer to it as the "sieve lion" due to its head shape.
The Green Lion was originally created by rebels to symbolise the Manchu-led Qing Dynasty, which invaded China in 1644. Its fierce appearance reflected this defiance, and in the past, it was an evil "sandbag" lion that performers would beat during performances.
Today, the Green Lion is primarily used in rituals, temple events, and Chingay parades to pray for peace, provide entertainment, practice martial arts, and ward off bad spirits. In Sabah, Green Lions are rare-you might only find one for every hundred other lion types.
