She has a distinct Medanese accent, but I think Hokkien speakers will generally understand her. I wonder how much of this conversation in Hokkien you can understand (all those in the video are residents of SG, but one is originally from Kinmen), and what it sounds like to you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6nFkoitfN6dd80

Its difficult to understand Hokkien for other Chinese speakers without prior exposure. But to me Hokkien is the easiest language for a non Chinese speaker to learn although I have not really learn to practise it. The observation stems from the fact a lot of non Chinese in Penang speaks Penang Hokkien where they picked it up from their neighbours and market Vendors. I am laways amused that my Malay friemds can pick up Hokkien phrases with ease .

No wonder the Taiwanese could not understand. She is speaking a hokkien with lots of Malay words. Similar to Penang Peranakkan Hokkien. A Klang Hokkien speaker from Malaysia or Singapore would also be able to understand although they are considered a different dialects. I dont speak hokkien and am a Cantonese speaker from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia but grew up with listening to hokkien occasionally from neigbours. I can understand her message generally. By the way Medan and Penang were once a common Hokkien sprachbund amongst the Hokkien migrants with strong marital and trade ties between the two communities

It seems like there are no translations available, so i will try my best to translate accurately. Disclaimer: I don't really know how to translate the term "chuei ciak" cause it is literally searching for food. In Bahasa Indonesia: 0:01 Halo, namaku Selly. In English: 0:01 Hi, my name is Selly. This is Chewy (?). I was born in Medan and currently residing in Bali with my husband which is a Javanese people. We have lived in Bali for almost 3 years. 0:16 Well..... Balinese cuisine are indeed delicious . Sometimes, I think about Medanese cuisine. Although, people sell Medanese cuisine in Bali, but it's not as delicious as in Medan itself. 0:29 At some point in the past, my husband and I flew to Medan to explore the culinary cause I couldn't stand the food craving anymore. The most delicious food in Medan, in my opinion are, bihun bebek (duck rice vermicelli), kari bihun (curry rice vermicelli), char siu (roasted pork) rice, uhhhhh...... fried rice, tiongsim wonton noodle, omg there are so many, chicken porridge, sate padang (padang satay). 1:05 One week is not enough to do food exploration. If possible, we will go to Medan again next time to explore the food with friends. I will bring you too Chewy. 1:17 Hmmm.... it's difficult and scary to go anywhere currently. I hope that covid 19 will pass quickly and people can go back to work and explore the food again. We can also travelling without any fear. 1:37 Awwww.... my child is already sleepy, want to go to sleep. Alrighty then, thank youuuu.
