From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them - a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) - and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

If it weren’t for Oppenheimer coming out the same year, hell yeah. I get that Oppenheimer is a feat of film making, but I know The Holdovers is going to be a movie I’m going to rewatch for every holiday season that is come.

A movie that can make you feel deeply human, belly laugh, tear up and root for the characters for two hours long, is a world class movie. Five stars out of five.

I can see what Angus was fighting for. My start at SCAD was a rough transition, but it was only 10 weeks and none of my professors were dicks (except one, but that’s irrelevant) like this joker, who is clearly a failure at life taking out his anger on his students. After the first quarter ended, I was on winter break, which is almost as long as the quarter itself, extending from Thanksgiving to New Year’s because of all the international population that would prefer not to be yanked back and forth. Sounded like party time, right? Wrong! It took me almost the whole of 10 weeks to find my flow and then everything just comes to a screeching halt? I couldn’t enjoy myself because I was in a constant state of underachievement, and all I wanted was to do was more work that would feed my JPA. Basically, as great as the long break was, the only word that describes the effect it had on my mental state and adjustment to college life is *Detrimental* In this case, how does this guy expect all of his students to do nothing but work when they’ve already put in their hours and are ready to just be with their families when he’s already brought nothing but misery to their academic lives already

@mmarshfairc3
@mmarshfairc3 8 ай бұрын
This film doesn’t have that issue. By far most of the actors look the part. The main character who is meant to be college aged IS college aged. He’s 21 years old, Dominic Sessa. This was his first major film debut.
