The Holocaust survivor sharing her story on TikTok - BBC Newsnight

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Holocaust survivor Lily Ebert - who was deported to Auschwitz aged 20 - shares her story alongside her great-grandson Dov Forman. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog
As those able to give first hand testimony of the Holocaust dwindle, their stories have become more precious.
Lily Ebert, 98, was 20 years-old when she and her family were taken to Auschwitz aboard one of the last trains to enter the camp in 1944.
Lily survived, but her parents and some of her siblings were murdered.
She shares her story alongside her great-grandson Dov Forman who helped her to set up a TikTok account to educate the younger generation.
January 27 marks Holocaust Memorial Day, where we remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and the millions of people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups, and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

I met Eva Frank one time in prison I volunteered to do the ann Frank exhibition for the public I was serving time I was 21 but they needed 8 people no one wanted to do it because in jail the Jewish prisoners are segregated lot more than others because of the majority of prisoners are Muslim and Christian young gang members so uneducated on the matter so I had to do it myself I'm an Irish Traveller so my knowledge on Ann Frank was very limited but six weeks later, after a lot of reading I was ready and I gave tours to the public in Brixton for two weeks anyway a few months later Eva comes in on a visit to educate prisoners and she asks for me by name I was abel to talk to her for 2 hours she showed me her number tattoos and it really hit home what the Jewish people went through and at the end she gifted me a signed copy of her book with a personal message to me inside that read "to Arthur, don't come back(smiley face) that was 10 years ago I never did go back.

@@suemaher5282 thanks for your kind words and I passed my experience on the subject on to my kid's and they have read the very book she gave me and being an Irish Traveller we are a protected minority under the 2010 Equality Act, and my kids found it hard to understand how white people could suffer from racism so it was a great way for her to understand that colour is a easy method to identify people and in its absence people will find other ways to identify the people they hate like culture and traditions even accents, we don't get it so much anymore the world has come a long way in a short time but I was born in 1990 in rural Ireland and the I.R.A threatened to burn our house down if my mum and dad put us to the local schools when I was about 5, so we came to England but I was so far behind at that stage at school i was bullied because I couldn't read, outcasted because I was different and misunderstood because of my culture it was sad because I was only 7 years old and I was afraid to go to school so I grow up hating people, so I done what I was always good at and that was boxing but I slowly realised that people respected fighter's and any time someone said something I would hit them and thats how I gained a reputation in the area got involved in crime drug dealing cocain mostly in my teens but anyways a guy said something stupid one night and I hit him so hard I broke he's jaw and shattered he's cheek bone I was given 18 months in prison but the Ann Frank exhibition helped me understand were this anger was coming from I hated that people could have such an impact on my mental health I felt like the whole world was against me but the real problem was I was uneducated so were they but I was deprived of it as basic human right so I made it my business to strengthen my mind as well as my body, I learned to read off a game console in prison because I kept asking my cell mate "what does this say" he would get really annoyed but after not long I was reading "a tail of two cities" , "The Count of Monte Cristo" , "the Landmark of Julius Caesar" , Hannibal", Socrates, among other Greek philosophers and it just went on and on after the ann Frank exhibition and I met Eva they moved me closer to home because my mum couldn't travel far so at Pentonville prison I joined a prison debate team we had the reigning champions of Oxford University come in and debate us on subjects such as prison reform and social inclusion.. We won, as a matter of fact on average prison debate teams are often more successful then not, let's just say we have all the time in the world" and even some would say we got lucky but I've noticed something about luck.. She likes to hang around people who practise the hardest, today I run 2 successful businesses and most of my employees are the ex prisoners from all walks of life and I'm happy as a scoundrel can be, well I just thought I'd give you the rest seen as you were kind enough to read my comment, thank you and be lucky.

Rose I saw a documentary on the liberation of one of the camps. The Americans had gone in and could not believe what they were seeing. The soldier in charge went down to the nearby town and told the officials to put their coats on and come with him. When they got there he made them take their coats off and give them to the Jewish prisoners. He then made them wheelbarrow the dead people on to the pile.
